1215076 2011-07-05 10:41:00 Hi Team

Please excuse the new thread, this is useful but if I'd posted in in my old thread I doubt that many would have ever seen it .

I did some more web searching and found This Site ( . com/node/16" target="_blank">winhlp . com) which has a lengthy technical disussion of the problem and offers several solutions .

I chose the easiest one, which was to go to My Network Places and on the left pane, choose to Hide UPnP devices . This operation does not disable the service . To see this choice, you have to have Tools, Folder Options, Show Common Tasks selected .

A quick restart and up came my missing Raid icon plus a few others (like the volume control) that I hadn't noticed were missing . I still don't have expansion arrows but what the heck . :D

As a bonus, my boot time is now back to normal, it had been taking two minutes for the MSE icon to go from red to green and that was annoying .

Cheers

1215077 2011-07-28 02:11:00 Well, The Cat Came Back . :badpc:

I noticed a slowdown in boot time and MSE not being enabled for a further minute or so after the desktop appeared, so I went back to Network Places again and sure enough, it had reverted to the old setting . I reset it and everything is now OK again .

I have not been playing under the hood or anything like that, in fact was about to start a post to ask how I could find out what new issue was slowing my boot time again when I noticed the volume control missing from the tray and thought "Uh-Oh, not that again" and shot off to NWP .

Any ideas on why or how that setting would have reverted back?

Cheers

1215078 2011-07-28 03:38:00 What has been installed since the problem began again ?

Things like updates, programs etc.

Nothing has beren installed other than the usual auto updates for MSE, MWB, Spybot, and probably Adobe. I don't give auto update rights to many programs at all and I'm not into adding programs willy-nilly so nothing much changes from month to month.

I did have a strange hang a week or so back that required a hard reboot via the on/off button, but I put that down to a possible erroneous mouse click when my fingers got ahead of my brain.

I'm not adventurous and I don't try demo programs or cute applets etc either.

It is all a bit puzzling really.

1215081 2011-07-28 09:14:00 It is the XP-Pro job, the one with the twin Raid-1 array that spits out WD Caviar Blank 640GB drive like olive pits in a Cocktail Bar. I'm currently up to No 5.

1215083 2011-07-28 11:21:00 While the systray problem could be something complete unrelated,

The WD black edition drives have a high failure rate, a lot higher than the blues for example - personally I wont touch the blacks any more - seen and had way too many fail in a very short period of time .

A while back I brought 5 ( from memory) WD blacks, all different batches, 4 failed within a month . ( not impressed, neither were the customers) Also seen 3 WD external drives in a two month period, all with failed black drives .

Secondly, the standard Desktop HDD's are not best run in a any sort of RAID configuration, they aren't really designed for it and can cause lots of problems .

WD make drives especially designed to run in RAID . Full story from WD own site ( . custhelp . com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1397" target="_blank">wdc . custhelp . com)

So basically running WD Blacks in a RAID configuration could be asking for trouble - and it looks like you may be getting it, or could be part of the cause why there are so many problems .

It is actually the Intel RAID Matrix Manager that is supposedly at fault, there is a massive thread on the Intel Forum all about this problem and later versions have cleared the problem apparently, but my disks report as dead so who am I to argue? I did get one to rebuild in the early days but that was definitely by good luck, not good management. I am comfortable now with the rebuild process and it only takes me a few minutes to swap the drive out and get the rebuild started. Rather wisely for me, I actually bought a spare disk at the get-go so that I could do just that.

Which reminds me, I dropped the 'crook' disk into Computer Lounge a week ago now and haven't yet received the replacement so I'd better rev them up in case I get another drop out.

I have to arrange a time for CL to update the software but that may prove difficult to do unless I can schedule a day and time with them. I can't leave the computer there for days as I have to work.

Cheers
