1184821 2011-03-09 21:40:00 Last December we went fishing (surfcasting) at a spot here in NP. I caught a live bait, put it on and about 30 mins later got this frickin bite. Hooked something massive, and I just could not turn it around that time. In the end the "thing" (because we never saw it) broke my hook. I thought in those days it was either a Kingi or a shark or perhaps a seal, but who knows.

Visited the same spot a few times since then, caught the usual but no big b*st*rd.

Went there again yesterday. Got there with an extra heavy duty rig - 100 lb line, 20 lb steel leader, shark hook, heavy duty reel. Live bait on again. Blimey, the b*gger took it again after about 20 mins. This time I had the rig to play it and I could turn it around, with great difficulty, at times. Played with it for about 60 minutes, and then started to see some colour. Then I realised "o you stupid *rs*h*l*, you haven't got the gaffe". Decided to work it towards a nearby beach and pull it in. Working it there, still fighting this fish, the line slipped over a little piece of rock and the sharp edge cut the line. B*gger. At least this time I saw the beast.

The fish was bigger than me - at one stage I had it near the edge and I could measure it's size (corresponding to markings on a ledge) later - and I am 6 ft tall. Not a Kingfish or a Tuna - no streamlined body. Big bulky, stocky body, grey all over with a whitish stomach. I tried to Google it this morning and the nearest example I could see was a very big Hapuka - but then people say you would not catch one in shallowish water. So I still wonder what it was because I never got it clear out of the water.

It's obvious that I will return to that spot again, but with a friend to help and gaffe the fish and to take photo's at least.

1184822 2011-03-09 22:08:00 Ah, the old fisherman's boast - "it was this big.... but it got away.....".

Better luck next time - pics (and preferably smoked fillets) or it didn't happen... :D

1184825 2011-03-09 22:58:00 Why don't you just leave the thing alone and let it enjoy its life? Agent_24 (57)

Leave the poor seals alone and eat the "bait". Probably tasty bait too.

1184829 2011-03-09 23:42:00 No, not stingray or flounder. Yeah I know - I've got a friend who also says "no photo, it did not happen" since we always catch and release. How the heck was I supposed to get my mobile phone out - I neede both me hands with this one.
