1184755 2011-03-09 10:25:00 I've been thinking about getting one of these (www.panasonic.co.nz). JB HiFi seem to have them (www.jbhifi.co.nz) on a good special. The only problem is the devices have different suffixes to the model number. I've also noticed yet another suffix on the Noel Leeming site.

Does anyone know what the suffixes mean and what differences there actually are between them (if any)? Any comments on the box itself?

1184756 2011-03-09 17:32:00 Purely at a guess, it is so they can get away with price guarantees etc. plod (107)

I guess that what has to be paid to record two channels at once and onto blu ray disks.

Thanks for posting this Tony. The Sony hard drive recorder we have will not receive digital signals and as our area gets digital in 3 months I am looking for a replacement. Pricespy lists these recorders (pricespy.co.nz) but interestingly does not include your Panasonic model. I look forward to what other PF1ers have to offer.

Yes, but only a guess.
Strommer, have you looked into Tivo, a lot cheaper

1184760 2011-03-09 18:22:00 The reason I am interested in the Panasonic is it is the only one (I think) that will actually record to Blu-Ray. Also the $1500 is only from Panasonic. JBHiFi are advertising it at $988 - which just sneaks in below my $1000 cut-off. Tony (4941)
1184761 2011-03-09 18:30:00 Yes, but only a guess.

Apparently...

From tivocentral.co.nz
Only with Telecom Broadband can you get the full, interactive TiVo experience. It gives you access to the CASPA On-Demand service that opens up an amazing world of broadband movies, television, music videos, concerts and artist interviews. ... Get Telecom Broadband and you can get a TiVo media device for as little as $200 up front, and $30 per month for 24 months on your Telecom account*. (prices may have changed since this article appeared)

TiVo certainly isn't cheap. You can pick up the Home Networking Package (which allows you to transfer files to and from your own PC (and Mac, although this isn't officially supported in New Zealand and you can't transfer video without additional software) for $920 and pay it off over two years should you choose. MySky HDi costs $599 up front or you can pay for it by adding $15 to your normal subscription cost ($25 if you want the HD 'ticket' to allow you to watch HD programmes and you don't have multi-room). The difference, of course, is once you've bought the TiVo it's yours to keep. You don't have to return it. If you give up your Sky subscription you have to return the box to Sky.

Yes, but only a guess.

The problem with Tivo is that we do not have Sky, nor do we intend to get it. And it does not look much cheaper to me.

1184763 2011-03-09 19:22:00 You can use a tivo box as a dvr with out telecom. Alex B (15479)
1184764 2011-03-09 19:27:00 I didn't realise until someone pointed it out to me the other day that Blu Ray disks have a region code which is similar to DVDs.

A: East Asia (except Mainland China and Mongolia), Southeast Asia, the Americas and their dependencies.

B: Africa, Southwest Asia, Europe (except Russia), Oceania and their dependencies.

C: Central Asia, East Asia (Mainland China and Mongolia only), South Asia, central Eurasia and their dependencies.
