1184223 2011-03-07 20:15:00 New Plymouth MP Jonathan Young is concerned that off-shore scammers can hide behind what appear to be New Zealand telephone numbers .

Police believe the scammers are operating overseas, possibly from India .

1184224 2011-03-07 20:31:00 Anybody can get a VoIP number from several providers in NZ. Just like in NZ you can get overseas numbers.

Many businesses legitimately do that for least-cost routing for their calling, as well as the ability to have customers call them for the cost of a "local call".

For example, I setup a server in a datacenter for an Auckland company, and we put an Australian number on it with Faktortel. It means they can call Aus for next to nothing, and Aussies can call them for the cost of a call to Sydney rather than the cost of an international call. It's good stuff, but just a shame that there's people out there abusing it.

Between this and the fake Tech Support calls, you've gotta wonder about what's going on over in India...
