2011-03-07 00:45:00 | I have to admit I've not really been interested in Blu-Ray players until now, they appear to be over-priced and I didn't really see the need to move beyond the DVD (or Avi for that matter). However I quite like the networkable ones that give you a bit more, like ability to play content from your PC or watch YouTube on your television. So with another birthday fast approaching, I used a wet Wellington day to research where the market was at. I had a few Fly Buys to use and so in theory it wasn't going to cost anything at all. Now the model I took a shining to was the Sony BDP-S570 (www.sony.co.nz), and it was available for around 600 Fly Buy points plus $350 dollars (way beyond what I was going to pay). Checked a few retailers and found they all appeared to sell it for $600 retail, getting further away from my grasp. So off to JB Hi-Fi for a bit of bartering, to find they had it down to $299 (I must admit I thought they had made a mistake in the pricing). Ten seconds of bartering later and I walked out with $259 added to my credit card. So if you want a Blue Ray player, get down to JB Hi-Fi and do the deal. I imagine they'd do the BDP-S370 for under $200. Now what to do with those Fly-Buys points.

2011-03-07 01:26:00 | Blu-ray players have been under $200 for months. If you in the market it would be silly not to buy one over a DVD player.

Has done 2 firmware upgrades since I have had it. Also allows you to view extra content from the internet on some Bluray disks. Bluray players also upscale DVD disks. We also don't have JBHiFi. Got some good BluRay disk bargains from JBHiFi at Mount Maunganui over Christmas. :) |

2011-03-07 04:40:00 | You watch computer content using DLNA (en.wikipedia.org) video streaming, well that's what I already do to play content directly from my PC to my network connected TV. DLNA works with Windows 7, don't think it works with Vista or XP. Saves getting one of those WDTV type boxes. These Blu-Ray players also have Internet TV, which allows streaming on websites like YouTube straight on to the TV across the network. The Sony BDP-S570 (www.sony.co.nz), will do this via the ethernet port on the back, or via the built in wireless directly to the router. Of course another solution is to attach an HDMI cable to a PC sitting next to the TV, the latest video cards will do the sound and video through the HDMI cable. The DLNA option however means you can play content from any PC on your network without having to have the PC in the same room. You can even launch it to your TV from a wireless laptop, although of course the more you use the wireless the more likely it won't stream seemlessly. I stick to the wired connection because I have a port directly behind the TV. I think Sony is about to drop the retail price as the next model is already on sale in the US. Should be bargains at the like of Noel Leemings or Dick Smith in coming weeks.

2011-03-07 10:00:00 | I believe the warehouse had some specials on for some blurays @ $20 for two discs. 2001 and Bladerunner was part of that deal... both are a must have, especially the latter. I also recently bought some stuff of cdwow as well... 9.99-12.99 for region B blurays! Just make sure to pay for the 50c TRANSIT INSURANCE though, as I had a LOTR boxset go missing... which they eventually resent after a period of time.
