| 1184334 | 2011-03-08 08:15:00 | When I was a schoolboy I thought that Lt. General the Lord Freyberg was the best Governor General you could ever have. He paid a visit to Westport one year and all us kids assembled in the Westport Domain. I remember he was dressed in an Army General's blue uniform. He gave a speech and at the end of it he gave us all the day off school.:D They all gave you the day off school. I remember both Cobham and Freyberg doing it. :) |

So tread warily here, you are challenging the basis of much western constitutional law. :D Tread warily there, I doubt that US State Governors deputise for the President. They are the head of their State government. |

| 1184341 | 2011-03-08 20:24:00 | Even though he was born an Englander imo he is one of NZs finest men. He really didn't want to see his New Zealanders soldiers killed needlessly, But was fearless himself. Seems unbelievable after General Haig and his mates only 23 years before. I believe this story was about Freyberg. Some stuffed shirt from the English army was complaining to him about the fact that Kiwi soldiers never saluted him. If my memory is correct, his response was along the lines that his experience was that if you saluted them, they would give you a friendly wave back. I like that in a commanding officer... Please correct me if I have got this story wrong. |

At least I got the bit about the other person being a stuffed shirt right! Another nice story about Freyberg (rough language warning) www.johnhearfield.com |
