1184197 2011-03-08 08:05:00 I'd go for this

www.jbhifi.co.nz

But if you want size, then this

www.jbhifi.co.nz

I'd always pick a Sony TV over anything else at the same price point though.

1184198 2011-03-08 08:08:00 ive heard a mix of good and bad about sony, top end seems to be top notch where as the lower stuff is overpriced rubbish.

I have read that the full hd stated by panasonic is not strictly true, while is has the 1080p resolution is doesnt carry that over video? Anyone able to elaborate because I dont understand.

That LG looks sweet though so theres another option

1184199 2011-03-08 08:16:00 Before buying any you should think whether all you want it for is watching TV or stuff off the Internet etc.

I bought a Samsung with an ethernet port and can stream movies etc from my NAS box but internet stuff is poor.

Every morning at 4am it reports home looking for firmware updates. Unfortunately, Samsung is doing a lousy job of adding "widgets" - all they have at the moment is Youtube, the weather and USA Today.
I sent them an e-mail asking when they would have things like TVNZ ondemand and the TV3 equivalent - no reply.

You should ask what other TVs will do.

1184200 2011-03-08 08:20:00 Watch out for Plasmas, they reflect like a mirror. You could probably comb your hair by the reflection.

1184201 2011-03-08 08:46:00 All the fancy features arent really a concern to me, we watch movies etc and get the sing star going, dont really watch tv as such. hueybot3000 (3646)

Sony all the way IMO - at the size you're after, 1080p is quite important, but you should get that as standard anyway . Also check the refresh rate; cheaper panels are slower, and you may get blurring during sports or games etc .

Bear in mind too that if you don't live in an area that gets Freeview HD (via UHF antenna), the inbuilt Freeview tuner is no good, as it doesn't receive DVB-S (Satellite) .

Don't bother with 3D, and don't get sucked into LED-hype either . And personally I wouldn't bother with Plasma either; it's heavy, hot and expensive (like my last girlfriend really . . . . . ) :p

1184203 2011-03-09 11:39:00 A little heat never hurts!

Im very interested in the below, seems to have good reviews and full hd which is always a plus. It basically ticks all my boxes. Not too badly priced at $1900

Panasonic TH-P50U20 (www.dse.co.nz)

Where does that fit in with the series?

That is the U series, midway. The V is $1000 more.

The new Panasonic plasma technology is NEO PDP which you'll have to research. It's in the V series sets only. NEO TVs do have a better picture than anything else I looked at although an LCD with the brightness turned up could compete.

Reviews of NEO sets are very positive. Wish my budget could stretch that far. :D

Being a geek like all of us here, I'd like an ethernet port too. Apparently some manufacturers have an agreement with Telecom that you can stream certain TV channels without affecting your broadband cap. Samsung is one.

However I asked a Telecom guy (who'd just bought a set) and he didn't know. So its a bit of a secret or completely untrue.

I read a comment that after 2 months one person didn't bother with internet TV. Far easier and better to use a laptop.

As for brands, IMHO Sony, Panasonic, and Samsung are good. Samsung get a lot of warranty claims but also sell a lot of sets.

To be honest, you probably can't buy a bad TV these days.

1184204 2011-03-10 00:28:00 Thanks for the info guys, I ended up gettin the panasonic. Got it for a good price and so far im pretty happy with it. It's not eye poppingly amazing but its big, has the few features I needed.

The 37 I already have will stay attached to the desktop for gaming as its a brilliant panel. The 50inch will sit in the lounge for movies etc.

Not too glossy either which is nice! Il get a pic up when I have a house to use it in lol

1184205 2011-03-10 03:45:00 Ive had my LG 50 inch for about 4 years now, no issues what so ever and one of the best pictures.
Not bad, full HD, rgb input, 4 hdmi inputs 1 component and 2 normal av inputs and a usb input.

1184206 2011-03-10 03:48:00 I did look at a few lg's in the shop but after looking at a few screens they start looking the same! Chances are tv will fall over soon anyway :-( hueybot3000 (3646)
