The infection rate for people that don't patch is much higher, on average . (A ton of data here ( . microsoft . com/security/sir/default . aspx" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com) . ) Upgrading to the latest software does often make a difference for security (for example, IE9 has security advances over IE8 ( . msdn . com/b/ie/archive/tags/security/" target="_blank">blogs . msdn . com)), but as a bare minimum I'd certainly recommend to friends and family to keep up with the security patches . Software you don't use and don't want to update is best removed . I don't have Adobe AIR or Java for that reason . cheers W |
