1184680 2011-03-09 22:36:00 Price rise has been solely responsible for making me bike to work this week. Have to say Im a lot less stressed after making the journey to and from work and the slight change in weather has been making the ride quite pleasant.

Just bought myself a mountainbike, which I am going to convert to road tyres and ride to work (don't want to expose my Roubaix to vagaries of the weather and the daily commute).

Made the decision partly on petrol price, partly on fatness (not a spelling mistake!), partly on parking and partly on the fact that there are showers and lockers in the new building I am moving to shortly....

Well done guys, we are moving premesis in about 4-6months to the infamous RSA in New Plymouth . I will be able to ride the walkway to and from work but i am worried about carrying my backups (HDDs) . does any one have any ideas here?? Fatness is one of my reasons now too, and a little bit of unfitness

Only reason i dont ride to work now is the busy main road (bloody gauntlet)

I don't understand modern cycles and cyclists, why dont they have mudguards fitted ?

When I was a young teenager I removed the mudguards from my Raleigh Clubman in order to look like famous track cyclist Reg Harris, result wet and mud up my front side and face from the front wheel, mud and wet up my back from the back wheel .

Why is that cyclists these days are so masochistic ?

1184687 2011-03-09 23:48:00 As far as mountain bikes go, I think it's a practicality thing (if they are being used off-road in the mud) - the mudguards just get clogged up.

Road bikes - it's more of a weight consideration.

That said, I don't enjoy riding on a wet road with no mudguard, so if it looks like rain, or has been raining recently, on goes the lightweight removable rear mudguard. Keeps a lot of the water and much of the grit out of 'sensitive' areas.... :)

1184688 2011-03-10 00:40:00 I have a car but I put the rego on hold, prob reapply for another 3 months before it finishes .

I use it for travel around the country but for daily commuting I prefer public transportation . I've never driven to work ever apart from 1 day, they have this thing where they have 1 carpark which employees can apply for . Through my travels public transportation I likened, it drops you there and it's just a stroll away, if you miss it you don't need to wait as they are so abundant . And, you see all ages taking it, incl the mother with toddlers to your retired person to a group of businessmen wearing suits .

With NZ I just go for a short walk or take the long way to the bus stop or windows shopping or have a coffee . . . . .

1184689 2011-03-10 00:54:00 I suspect that the fuel that we are buying at the wonderful new price has been in the country for about a month. profiteering at it's best..

So in reality, the price increase should happen after a month! As long as the prices keep increasing, the petrol companies continue making money.

I think we are all in the wrong business!!
