| 1184304 | 2011-03-08 00:15:00 | Former head of the Defence Force Lieutenant General Jerry Mateparae has been appointed New Zealand's next Governor-General. Sir Anand Satyanand ends his term as Governor-General in August. Lt Gen Mateparae's appointment has been approved by the Queen and he will be sworn in on August 17, beginning a five-year term as New Zealand's 20th Governor-General. Think what you may about the institution, the office is a legal requirement, we're stuck with it, and I also can't think of any better person than Lt General Mateparae to be the next incumbent. And what a superb master stroke by master politician John Key. Mateparae is widely respected by many New Zealanders, and stirrers like Harawira would find it difficult now to gain traction against us white mother whatevers. Even with Ngapuhi, his main power base. |
