1215547 2011-07-08 04:26:00 Hello,

I'm looking and centralising my files on a NAS drive connected to my router.

Does anyone have either of these drives and have any recommendations please.
Seagate BlackArmor NAS110
or
WD MyBook World edition.

Similar specs and price for 1TB.

Cheers,
Vic.

1215548 2011-07-08 04:33:00 Can you clear up exactly what you want ??

In the title is says DRIVER, yet in the post it appears to be asking for advice ???

RE the WD MyBook World edition.

If its advice - just check what Hard drive is in them - If they have the WD Black Editions, be warned - they have a high failure rate.

The blues and green are fine.

1215549 2011-07-08 04:45:00 Err, that should be "drive". not driver...
The WD uses the green drive, it states only use these drives even in replacement.
I want to keep all my photos, music and video on one 'drive' and be able to access them from every PC / Mac in the house...

1215550 2011-07-08 05:05:00 I'm a big WD fan. I've got 3 of the Western Digital MyBooks ( www.pclaunches.com ) but have always used something else to share the data from them.

If the WDTV is anything to go by how easy to use they are, then I'd say the MyBook World Edition should be awesome.

Great & reliable too, well ventilated setups.

Wasn't a fan of the Seagate BlackArmour drives when I've used them in the past. All minor gripes, but yeah ...

I've used both and found the Seagate to perform better but the WD software to be easier to use. With a gun to my head I'd prob go Seagate. They're both good though. :2cents:

1215553 2011-07-08 05:24:00 Building your own NAS could be an idea, esp if you have a spare machine ( or bits) laying about.

Been playing about with Amahi Home Server (http://www.amahi.org/) - works really nice - idiot proof ( almost) to setup :D and according to the site it compatible with:

Cross-platform compatibility

It's easy to use and offers cross-platform compatibility across many clients
•PC
•Mac
•Linux
•Meego
•iPhone
•iPad
•Android
•Google TV
•Playstation
•Xbox
•HDTVs
•Roku, TiVo .. and more!

Its free, installed from the new Express CD (blog.amahi.org)
- you need to create a free account to get a install code, but thats all.

It has the ability to allow permissions as well for each user to the network shares, remote access.

1215554 2011-07-08 06:27:00 I've used a BlackArmor NAS110 can't complain, its not that hard to setup. Performance is alright to. stormdragon (6013)

This has been my experience as well. The WDs have tended to be simpler, but the Seagates, for me, have performed better. All the WD NAS encolsures I've used have had Green drives, which may be the cause for the performance discrepancy from Seagate. If you just want bulk storage, I'd go WD - they seem to be slightly cheaper, and are easier to work with imo, but if performance is of high importance, the Seagate will be your best bet.
