1186054 2011-03-14 11:03:00 Having spent a good couple of yrs in Dunedin, as it was so compact I never took a bus, I walked everywhere incl to Briscoes which was like 45mins

If you can spend more and get something that really last have a look at Kathmandu and get their Goretex stuff or the cheaper equivalent. If you research Goretex might not be the best breatheable and water resistant garment now and afaik Goretex patent has expired and competitors are now offering their technologies that is even better and at some time even more expensive. When you go back to SG, they would have to be sold unless you reserve them for overseas travel. If you are wanting something where you can use the pockets better/easier and something that is substantial, not paper thin - I suggest the 3 layer Goretex (the std one). Don't get the paper thin Goretex Paclite - I have that for travel, at times they are actually more pricey, they good for jogging and cycling too ... You could however get the Paclite that is a mid weight. But those are quite pricey for the lifestyle adv etc. Get them on sales (specials only), Kathmandu has regular offers, around 40% off, I think you could get a Goretex for under $300 I think.

But foremost, I would get a duvet jacket hands down. They are so much warmer. Goretex are not warm, they are just protection, you need a fleece jacket underneath but even if you get a 300 series fleece jacket they are not as warm as the duver jackets. Many are not water resistant. On special, duvet jackets could be had for $150-180. Without too much problem you could wear the duvet jacket underneath the std Goretex too. I did that when I had a flu.

For gloves you can just get fleece or wollen gloves. Yo could get ski gloves but I don't think they are really needed, with a jacket, you can tuck your hands in the sleeves of the jacket.

You could also get thermals too, be it synthetic polypropelene quite cheap again at Kathmandu, The Warehouse also have them but they are not good quality then you can get merino wool which is natural. I haven't used mine yet, I returned some ski's so got some Ice Breaker stuff on sale which they have 2 sales per year only. Ice Breaker is sold at various stores ..... but they are not cheap. The thing with them is they can restrict movement. I did get them a bit larger my one is like a semi outside wearing garment too so it's a bit loose but maybe they won't trap as much heat

But again like your shoes NZ is quite a bit more expensive :D
And again Auckland is quite a bit warmer than much of the country.

PS - dunno about writing with a pen, no one does it, none of the international students I know incl from SG.
Oh - woollen hat essential. Like my SG friend says, it's like being in the army.
Couldn't you gotten a duck feather jacket from SG - my friend did. You would stand out.

1186055 2011-03-14 11:21:00 For a waterproof jacket, there are cheaper ones - all brands you name it. Fairydown, Nike etc whatever. If you get it too cheap the liquid could soak thru the garment. If you then are going to get something decent, Goretex or not, Kathmandu do tend to be one of the cheaper ones. Many shops don't have sales as regular as Kathmandu and as cheap as them. Just have a look at Fairydown or Macpac. Granted the workmanship is maybe better with the those "2" thou. But for clothing I don't think it's too impt. Nomad (952)

$300 jackets.
Nah .. $120 gloves for them when on sale. I said he doesn't need those gloves for that.
But gloves woolen might look a bit better if you going out etc .. $10-15.
Me thinks leather gloves looks odd.

That website, if a student worn one of those jackets, seriously you'll stand out. With people it might be a opposing magnet. Those high end stuff is actually quite common with students, and their iphones/androids/laptops ...

1186058 2011-03-14 18:56:00 The best gloves you will ever buy are the half possum half merino ones, cost about $30 and just amazing I wear mine into the hills tramping in winter and even if they get soaked take them off wring them out put them back on instantly warm.

Although it never gets cold enough in Auckland for real cold weather clothes

1186059 2011-03-15 09:58:00 Thanks, will check those places out. Kathmandu is a store chain right?

A good jacket would be a duvet jacket then? My cousins bought me a jacket before i left, but it turns out that its only good for NZ's summer weather.

Yeah that's the chain. Wait for the specials, they may give promotions to uni students near the start of semester but don't the specials are no where as good.

Duvet would be good, they are warm but they are not water resistant. Dunno, up to you. A or B - warmth vs water resistance. Or both. Do you have a decent water resistant jacket now anyway? Althou it doesn't get that cold in Auckland, I imagine a decent amount of people do wear duvet jackets.

For gloves, I also like those possum/merino gloves, they match your attire when you go out. Leather and ski gloves can look gay in urban, likewise the thich wollen gloves or those v thick wollen tan colour tramping gloves or those white gloves with the red stripe at the cuffs :p
