Radioactive material may have leaked from Japanese reactor

www.cnn.com

National Radio reported earlier that they are venting radio-active gases into the atmosphere to relieve pressure, they are on battery backup with less than 8 hours to go then: meltdown.

1185256 2011-03-11 23:55:00 Having grown up in the shadow of several nuclear power stations, and having a friend whose father was senior in charge of Dungeness B station I can say fairly confidently that they have leaks all the time that we never get to hear about.

They can have a place in the world but I would prefer them to be built somewhere where the earth is actually stable. So not around the Pacific ring of fire

1185257 2011-03-12 00:03:00 Japan just declared nuclear emergency with radiation levels 1000 times above normal in parts of the affected plant.

Still want one of these in your back yard?

No, I would rather freeze in the dark.

1185259 2011-03-12 01:11:00 Do we really need a nuclear power plant? Surely there is still plenty of hydro potential and we have tons and tons of coal.

Besides, whose back yard would you put one in? "Not mine," says everyone.

Yes. The NZ TV media are doing a bit of scare mongering here.

Algazeera who has been on Stratos all day had a nuke expert from the UK on who put things into perspective..

The only reason that this one has any problems is because the backup generator failed after the EQ to keep the cooling tower going. They are trying to get a new generator in place so that they can restart the cooler but they may have to vent it first.

Plenty of hydro sites available but the greenies and do gooders are worried about topping the odd slug.

Absolutely, the country can provide any amount of Hydro Power so why would one look for alternatives.

Not only do the lakes provide power, but they are a wonderful recreation facility.

As far as I’m concerned the whole thing is a no-brainer and as far as the Greenies go, tell them we’re having a power station and it’s Hydro or Nuclear, your choice. ;)

Agree also, Hydro is very cheap compared to Solar and Wind. Obviously more environmentally friendly than Oil or coal not to mention cheaper.

NZ has benefited heavily from hydro over the decades, I consider the environmental impact small compared the alternatives.
