1185294 2011-03-12 19:11:00 And yet - a nation which has one of the strongest economies on the planet today. Because in part they have a strong and secure electricity supply.

.

Well they did have a strong economy.
But not so much anymore.
And it was because they started making everything the world bought. cars, electronics. Etc.

Not cause of their power plants.

1185296 2011-03-12 19:38:00 Small ones such as the ones such as the reactors used in the US Navy are plausible. They are tiny compared to the ones used in power stations and much more easy to contain in the even of an emergency.

On the US A/C carriers the reactors are so efficient they can go 20 years before a fuel top up.

I think the risks for large scale nuclear power are (possibly) too great however small scale power may work. if we need big then maybe if we buy some outback in aussie, bung a few big ones in there and run a cable over? :D

From a TV report:

While there has been an explosion, it was just on the TV, that the reports are saying the actual reactor is still intact and contained .
What exploded was the build up of gas and steam / pressure to a level that caused the explosion . IF the reactor had melted down there would have been a huge hole in the roof, which from what they can see has not happened .
Pressure has been building up in the reactor – it's now twice the normal level – and Japan's Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency told reporters Saturday that the plant was venting "radioactive vapors . "
Saturday's explosion was caused by vented hydrogen gas and destroyed the exterior walls of the building where the reactor is, but not the actual metal housing enveloping the reactor . They have been venting the vapors, which of course will contain some radioactive gases . See this report ( . stuff . co . nz/world/asia/japan-earthquake/4763370/Race-to-cool-nuclear-plant-damaged-in-Japan-earthquake-and-tsunami" target="_blank">www . stuff . co . nz) - whether people want to believe it or not, only time will tell .

I hope you are right.

There are problems at 4 other nuclear power stations.

I'd love to know how many workers are at the plant.

1185301 2011-03-12 21:18:00 I'm only printing / Linking what I read from looking at various sites, and whats on TV.

Hell I'm not expert - would never claim to be.All I know is if it all goes wrong - leave it to the experts who know how to handle it.(hopefully) other wise as per a previous post Picture says all (www.imagef1.net.nz) --

I don't go jumping to conclusions - learnt that years ago. I added another link/report, it goes a bit more in depth, and may give some light to the question asked re the workers.

1185302 2011-03-12 21:20:00 If nuclear power is such a rosy product to illuminate our future, kindly explain to me why the every nuclear illuminated watch I have ever owned has expired.
In favour of the infernal things, if one was sited on Soames Island, and could crisp everyone within 20KM, we would lose some good people along with those obvious expendables, but we could surely benefit from the glow-in-the-dark survivors as emergency street lighting.

1185303 2011-03-12 21:41:00 I suggest putting a nuclear power plant in Hone Hawira's backyard gary67 (56)
