1185461 2011-03-13 09:22:00 Well, it's a done deal, after narrowing down the choices to "Electrolux" and "Dyson", both bagless and similar price, the deciding factor was the ease of removal of the canister for emptying. The "Electrolux" one looked like a clear winner untill the salesperson went to remove the canister. It did not seem to be an easy operation, and furthermore looked rather fragile in it's attachment. The "Dyson" on the other hand, was much easier to empty and appeared to have a much more solid fixing of the canister. Yes, we realise the periodic cleaning of the filters will be a pain in the proverbial, I feel that the saving in not continually purchasing bags will outweigh that.
Thanks again for all your comments, they were all taken on board before a decission was made.

So what type of dyson did you get in the end ? a upright or a cannister type one.
Also enjoy all the dust/dirt etc floating around as you empty it in to your bin.

1185462 2011-03-14 04:51:00 Hi wmoore, we got a model DC 23, nice and compact which was also a factor as storage space is very limited. Only given it a brief spin, but seems to do the job well. rny (6943)
1185463 2011-03-14 08:13:00 Well, for what it is worth, we replaced our vacuum cleaner recently, and SWMBO bought a bagless DC23 Dyson. I tried placing Consumer reviews extolling the virtues of Miele under her nose, I reminded her of the upright Dyson we had where all sorts of plastic things fell off; in short, I tried manfully to talk her out of getting another Dyson.

I failed. She wouldn't even go with me to the vacuum cleaner shop - insisted on going alone, which is when I knew there would be a Dyson coming. Sure enough, Dyson #2.

It works well, looks cool, it isn't an upright (yes, there may be a god after all), so it won't get bashed around trying to get under the furniture like the old one. It also fits in the only conceivable cupboard in the house (mind you, a Miele would have as well), and we don't have to buy bags or replace filters. Finally, and this is the clincher, She is happy. She would have been resentful if I had got my way.

1185464 2011-03-14 08:41:00 Check out the consumer mag for the reliability. Some are really poorly made. Meile I believe are one of the the best, and have great build quality. I have a cat and dog one, and it is the best vacuum I have had. I have had a few other brands, and they have all broken or failed in different areas. robbyp (2751)
1185465 2011-03-14 08:55:00 I recommend a Miele if you can afford it. Suck is so powerful it will pull the nails out from the floor Recommend the Miele as well.

SWMBO hated out old cleaner, it was bag-less :yuck: waste of money.

She said she wanted a good one:

We got the Miele cat and dog - the suck is powerful - the brush head really lifts the dog hair out, and the same one Winston linked (www.harveynorman.co.nz) With the normal flat head, on full power - it really sucks down good - on the wooden kitchen floor its a struggle to move as well on full power.

1185466 2011-03-14 08:55:00 Only had 3 vacuums in 40 years all Philips, reckon 10 year old one got at the moment will outlast me then some. Still sucks like hell.
Netherlands built ones though, not communist chinese rubbish.
