1185285 2011-03-12 11:28:00 Tiwai Point would be a good place for a Nuclear build. Put the power right next to the biggest user and the one who pays the least per unit. Snorkbox (15764)
1185286 2011-03-12 11:36:00 Having Nuclear Reactors in New Zealand, an earthquake prone region would be the height of foolhardiness, and here we have the proof laid out right before our eyes.

I hope to hear no more nonsense talk about how our future in NZ includes nuclear reactors anyone who thinks that these things are safe after this should seriously question their common sense.

That's all I can say.
I feel really sorry for all the workers at that plant.

1185288 2011-03-12 12:08:00 I hope the guys in the control are still trying to save the plant.

They will be sacrificing themselves, like the guys who buried the reactor did at Chernoybl.

Completely understandable and I respect your point of view.

Did you know Japan has 55 nuclear energy reactors? A nation which just like NZ is situated on a tectonic plate edge.

A nation, furthermore which has had the sole experience of two devastating nuclear bomb explosions.

A nation which has every reason to fear and reject nuclear energy. And yet - a nation which has one of the strongest economies on the planet today. Because in part they have a strong and secure electricity supply.

A nation which has not had significant nuclear disasters despite the number of reactors. There have been incidents but nothing big until now. In an old reactor.

You have your opinion and I have mine. Perhaps we can just agree to differ.

1185291 2011-03-12 13:13:00 Those`reactors were foisted onto the Japanese by the Americans, they were the guinea pigs and now they have paid the price. zqwerty (97)
1185292 2011-03-12 18:06:00 Yes there has been an explosion at one of the reactors at the Fukushima nuclear plant. Live on TV - astonishing and awful.

My guess is the containment building has been breached from the build-up of water pressure around the reactor. That has resulted in radioactive dust and smoke being released into the environment.

Its sort of like Chernobyl in real time.

Crickey !!

1185293 2011-03-12 19:01:00 Hydro is very cheap

That doesn't seem to stop the crooks that run them making it cheap for the consumer.
