1215430 2011-07-08 04:07:00 Just priced an AMD Athlon II X2 255 3.1GHz Socket AM3 and it will cost $94.23. Would it be worth spending a bit more for dual core?

X2 255 is dual core (note the X2 in the model name) :p

And yes, the extra $14.23 is well worth it.

1215431 2011-07-08 04:08:00 Most likely, dual or more core will be better for most things. Agent_24 (57)

Everything. It's just quicker.

1215434 2011-07-08 04:39:00 Just about anything, especially if you are running multiple programs at once.

As I said, a Sempron will work but it isn't the lowest-end CPU for nothing.

Although in saying that, I am right now using my Sempron 2800+ 1.6Ghz (Socket 754) which dual-boots XP and Ubuntu and which I find acceptable for many things.

About the only commonly-used thing it can't really do well is fullscreen Youtube videos - however I blame Flash because if I download the videos manually and watch with VLC there's no problem.

At the end of the day if you want a cheap CPU that will just plain work then a Sempron is OK. Just don't complain on the forum when Crysis doesn't run very well.

However even the slowest dual-core should be worth the upgrade, especially if it's only $15 more.

1215435 2011-07-08 04:45:00 I wouldn't bother with Crysis. Don't even know what Crysis is.

Would I run into any problems using Windows7 Home Premium with either the Sempron or the dual core X2 255?

1215436 2011-07-08 04:54:00 No there will be no problems with either but the Athlon II will be faster and will let you put off upgrading again for longer.

As I said earlier, the Sempron (In this case for AM3 your only choices are the Sempron 140 and 145, 2.7 and 2.8Ghz respectively which are both slower than the Athlon II 255 which is 3.1Ghz AND dualcore) is actually an Athlon II with one core disabled, and with the right board may be unlocked IF you are lucky, but there are no guarantees it would work or if it would work stably.

All up, unless you really simply cannot afford the Athlon II, you should get the Athlon II.

It might be worth looking on TradeMe, however, you should be able to get one for a better price than retail.

1215437 2011-07-08 08:21:00 Correction. If you can't afford the athlon II, you shouldn't be considering upgrading. Seriously, the semprons are bottom of the barrel no money no alternative not wanting to do more than open a single word document at a time sort of cpu's.

If you want to do ANYTHING even REMOTELY productive and not upgrade in about 2 months when you throw your ENTIRE computer out the window in frustration, you will go for a dual core.
