1186643 2011-03-16 02:05:00 Was talking to my daughter today and we were discussing retirement in general. She asked about Kiwisaver and how much do you have to put in each year for the govt to match it dollar for dollar. So I said "I think it is about $1024 which equates to one gigabyte I guess." I would like lots more gigabytes of course!

My retirement is when I get the pension in 18 mths time so I will be getting about 50% more than what I get now on a benefit. Any more over and above that amount each week would be a bonus and I'd be comfortable with that.
Very difficult to work out in a lump sum, it is the actual income that you have to go by.

You are only a youngster yet then.

Not sure how much Goodiesguy would require to retire today on his 15th birthday though.

Almost certainly 50 years from today everybody will be paying more for everything as inflation is very unlikely to be zero over that period of time.

1186645 2011-03-16 09:52:00 I would want around $75k/year to be completely content, plus a freehold house worth around $600k. This is assuming I am supporting a family and living in Wellington. I think around $1.8M to generate income and $600k for the house, $2.4M total, would be enough to keep me going for life (including keeping up with inflation) and buy me everything I would ever want, and let my future wife (if any) retire immediately as well! I am assuming I can achieve 4% return after inflation in the long run.

I am 20, by the way. My figures assume living off the interest (some of it) so the entire capital amount remains indefinitely and grows with inflation which I assume to be 3%.

1186646 2011-03-16 10:03:00 not average, but "you" to live the lifestyle you would want/desire/cruise whatever
Would you be happy green? selfsufficent?
Would you want a superyacht?
Would you want to be able to upgrade you car every 3 years? or happy with your 94 corolla?

Im still thinking but.......

Enough to not have to retire to Tokoroa :waughh:

1186647 2011-03-16 10:08:00 Provided I have a house and it's paid off, I want 40k per adult, 80k for a couple .

I am content to grow my vegetables, look for bargains etc . . don't upgrade computer freq but I do like to travel but happy to stick to backpackers private room . Plus that many places are cheaper, ie . , Middle East and various parts of Asia .

One way of doing is a 2nd house/apartment to be rented out .

If I can, like to be overseas 3 months a year .
