1185274 2011-03-12 07:01:00 Cicero should be able to advise on the Christchurch nuclear station now that the Avon is out for hydro development. He managed to have his tank implode with no need for earthquakes or other shenanigans. ;) What an energy saving that must represent. R2x1 (4628)
1185275 2011-03-12 07:10:00 Haha zqwerty (97)
1185276 2011-03-12 07:34:00 I did in the 1970's !
The power went out for several hours each night.
And I think we have had brown outs as they call them in the 90's

1185277 2011-03-12 08:24:00 Radiation levels 1000 times normal in one control room.
If there are still any techs in the control room they'll be potentially sacrificing their lives for their countrymen in trying to avert further disaster.

Now for a warped and inappropriate response: At least the japs not inexperienced with dealing with radiation. At least this time it's their own nuclear material that is threatening them.

As for nuclear energy - few people ever look at the process of extracting and preparing nuclear fuel - it's immensly energy intensive, and involves a large area of open-cast mining as well. THen there's the hazards Japan is currently facing (which may do a Chernobyl and blow worldwide), and the storage and disposal issues which are a headache for many many centuries.
Nuclear energy in its current form is bad, bad, bad. It's writing cheques for future generations to have to cash.

1185278 2011-03-12 09:19:00 I say no to nuclear power stations in this country. We have plenty of other options e.g. hydro, thermal, wind, solar, tide, solar or anything else other than nuclear power.:ban Bobh (5192)
1185279 2011-03-12 09:22:00 No.

Full stop I say.

1185280 2011-03-12 09:25:00 One Jap reactor has exploded...

TV channels warned nearby residents to stay indoors, turn off air-conditioners and not to drink tap water. People going outside were also told to aviod exposing their skin and to cover their faces with masks and wet towels.

This has added a whole other dimension to the recovery and cleanup.
Now all that can go into this zone is heavy machinery. People injured, trapped or dead in contaminated zones will likely not be recovered now - just bulldozed and buried with the contaminated soil.

Hindsight - why weren't the emergency generators up on the rooftops?

1185281 2011-03-12 09:32:00 Obviously this disaster should also be regarded as a warning. No matter how foolproof humans make something, it will never be a match to whatever mother earth can dish out. qazwsxokmijn (102)
1185282 2011-03-12 09:34:00 Yes there has been an explosion at one of the reactors at the Fukushima nuclear plant. Live on TV - astonishing and awful.

My guess is the containment building has been breached from the build-up of water pressure around the reactor. That has resulted in radioactive dust and smoke being released into the environment.

Its sort of like Chernobyl in real time.

1185283 2011-03-12 09:40:00 The Fukushima reactor is an old Westinghouse design, 40 years old. It has long been known as a bad design and had additional safety features added.

There are at least 4 reactors at this site but only one has failed. There is no risk of a nuclear bomb type of blast. Instead there is likely to be a melt-down releasing a lot of radioactive dust into the atmosphere.

Yes, this can kill you but you can protect yourself. Basically its like avoiding a poison gas - get far away for a while until wind and rain dissipate the harm.

And yes, even now, I'd have nuclear plants in NZ.
