1217193 2011-07-16 02:36:00 Hey Guys,

I have been away from the forums for a while.

I'm picking between these laptops but I am having trouble deciding.
The purpose of this laptop is for:

- University Study,
-Casual gaming - COD/BFBC2 - mostly FPS etc
-Video converting (as my mum recently purchased an iPad 2 and requires me to convert movies/tv shows) - my current laptop takes around 10-14 hours to convert one season of a TV Show at the moment

I need a laptop that is fast & efficient. I won't be traveling with it as I own a netbook for lectures etc.

Also, is the difference between Core i5 & i7 big? Will the i7 decrease the time to convert media files, will using multiple applications be much a difference on the i7 compared to i5?

If you own any of these two laptops or tried it out, please provide some feedback on it.

With the Dell, I'm considering upgrading my graphics to the 2GB NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 540M graphics with Optimus. (Unless you feel it's not worth it for me)

Cheers guys. :D

Well I'd be choosing between different models of ASUS and not looking at dell.
However. Yes, i7 is better than i5 and for video, you want a good CPU.

Gaming - you want the best GPU you can get, especially for FPSs.

1217196 2011-07-16 04:24:00 I hear the XPS are better than their lower level models, but still not a fan of dell's stuff.

As pctek recommends, I would say a higher level ASUS would do you well. I haven't heard anything to fault their reputations yet.
Yeah the i7 would be pretty good for converting movies due to its hyper threading, but honestly the i5's come pretty damn close too.

1217197 2011-07-16 04:56:00 The XPS with 1920x1080 screen upgrade, 720p screens are crap.

The 1920x1080 screen is an extra $258. 720p is 1280×720 not 1366x768.

The i7 is also an extra $150 vs base price. And the 540M is an extra $130.

If you add it up at same/similar specs the ASUS is $300 cheaper than the Dell. The Dell also looks fairly ugly (based on the pictures).

Worth it.

Incredibly hard to find a laptop with a decent screen below 2K

1217199 2011-07-16 05:31:00 Although I can't say from experience. 1920x1080 might be a little much on a 15" screen. Cato (6936)
1217200 2011-07-17 07:13:00 Thanks for the responses guys . :)

Is there a specific ASUS model you would personally recommend around the current cost of the Dell XPS?

The price of the ASUS on Playtech looks too good to be true but am willing to look at other options . i7 would be preferred as well .

It seems Dell is getting some negative responses and I am just curious why it is . Is the quality & build poor for Dell's compared to the ASUS?

I have no experience with Dell as I have used Toshiba & HP in the past .
