2011-07-15 18:43:00 | NANA#2 has changed her broadband plan with clearnet - has increased the usage to 3gb. They said it would be faster - WRONG. She rings panicking that shes only had this new package for 8 days and is already up to 4 gb. NANA #2 leaves her pc on during the day .... only checks her emails and may do the odd web surfing but no downloading of big files. Her Belkin wireless router is passworded, which I knew it was cause I did it :) and this was confirmed by Belkin Australia after she recieved a phone call from them ...(this was a legit call) a starter in trying to find out what was going on. Clearnet said you must turn your Belkin "off" when not using the pc. () You must have a virus. Last night I ran CCleaner and then did a ESET online scan and that found diddly squat (nothing) Even if the usage meter is giving a false reading .... and you halved it ... there is no way in heck she has used 2 gb in 8 days. On the biggest usage day she checked her emails... turned the pc off ..... went out for 5 hours .... checked her emails when she got home and in that time the usage had skyrocked. You views on what to do next would be greatly appreciated as always.:help:

2011-07-15 21:13:00 | Last night I ran CCleaner and then did a ESET online scan and that found diddly squat (nothing) I'd run Spybot, Malware Bytes and HJT as well just to be sure. Then ring telstra and complain about the inaccurate usage.

2011-07-15 23:16:00 | What sort of security is on the belkin router ? Could be someones cracked the password and simply stealing the connection. there is no way in heck she has used 2 gb in 8 days. You'd be surprised - I have a family's PC's here at the moment, the father was complaining about how much usage was being used over 1 week - I pulled up Telstras usage meter, went right in to the hourly totals -- Then asked who was on the internet from 1am -3am on the certain day, used 1.5GB ------- The son all of a sudden went very red  I was only browsing -- Yeah right. Its actually very simple - turn off the modem - check the usage at that time later on, if there is any usage its a Telstra problem - if not then look at what shes actually doing - watching Youtube -- that will suck through the usage. She may not be telling you everything If its still not to clear as to whats using it, call telstra, demand to be told what sites or places have used the data at a certain high time - they can tell you exactly where it was used. The usage meter only gives daily totals, but they can look deeper. BTW - updates can suck through a bit as well, service packs etc - all little bits add up.

2011-07-16 01:02:00 | Thanks PC & Wainu .... heading up there shortly so will have a look at the hourly usage ... ring Clearnet ..... and do a HJT and bring that back and post it. :) | Kaycee (14727) | |
2011-07-16 01:23:00 | install networx, it will give you a graph showing how much was downloaded and when from when you installed it. | nedkelly (9059) | |
2011-07-16 07:35:00 | Have decided that Teltra's support are noddy's.... or am I WRONG. I put Rackeys broadband useage on my machine this morning as an experiment. Thought I would try it on Nana 2# machine and it went balistic, when I connected to the internet. The download speed was whizzy ... it hummmed big time. Oh ... PC & Wainui .... Nana #2 is 66 years and wouldnt know how to find play on Utube ..... not being mean .... she is my sister. :) So disconnected from the net.. removed nortons 360 ... (yet to get the cleaner for that) and put on Microsoft Essentials and yet again that scan didnt find anything. For the time I had been connected to the net with this wee program showed I had used around 27 mb which was good. Next .... the noddy at Telstra Clear... and this was a NZ noddy ... opps did I say that. All I got for 1/2 an hour was its coming from your machine and your password. You need to turn the Belkin off. This pc has not been connected to the net (pc powered off but the belkin on) since 5.15 pm last night when I left ESET running but the internet was disabled. At 9.15 this morning 142 mb is registered as being used. The first time this machine was turned one was at approx 1.15 when I return to try and sort out this prob. I know Im Nana #1 and green around the gills but how does that happen or am I missing something

2011-07-16 07:39:00 | Sorry PC .... will do Malware and Spybot tomorrow | Kaycee (14727) | |
2011-07-16 07:55:00 | Well if the PC was turned off and it is still using data it is not likely to be a Malware problem. I suspect the modem is actually using the data and you can check that easily as Wainuitech has suggested by turning it off and checking if the usage stops. You could also disable the wireless in the modem and if the unusual data stops you will need to change the wireless password in the modem as it has probably been compromised.

2011-07-16 07:57:00 | To repeat what I put earlier -- "Its actually very simple - turn off the modem - check the usage at that time later on" Thats the MODEM, the black Motorola supplied by Telstra. If thats turned off, then the usage should be ZERO. ( thats assuming she is using cable and not ADSL) If the usage is Zero with no modem on, then someones either gotten the password, or there is some sort of infection. Question -- If shes the only one using the Internet, why even have a Belkin Router or is it wireless she uses ?
