1187449 2011-03-19 04:50:00 Failures can happen to anyone, any time - just finished having to do a complete backup / reinstall from last night .

Why ?

Dont know if its coincidence or not  But There was another thread here I was looking at, and it was a slide show of Area51 PC build ( nice work BTW) --- When going to view it, a message poped up saying you need the latest Adobe flash player ??

Ok thought I had it, maybe not-- 10 . 2 . 15 . 32 -- downloaded it, and a few minutes later all hell broke lose .

Internet connection stopped, rebooted and crashed twice - totally screwing the reg  Spent a good hour trying to rebuild / fix it, system restore was completely screwed .

Thankfully WHS did its nightly backup last night as per usual :wub - dropped last nights image back and sweet as now . :banana Only lost a couple of mails from this morning and a 2 . 1GB of 2 . 2GB download :(

Moral -- Backup often - you never know when you will need it, no matter who you are .

1187451 2011-03-19 06:00:00 Oh I always need backups. issue being I just don't have the proper ability to back all my stuff up (curses boarding house's no desktop policy)

End result when I accidentally make a new partition table or install ubuntu to the wrong partition is a scramble for help here because of my retarded mistakes :D

Nothing vitally important on my lappy anyway. just stuff thats annoying to re code or re download

 My words were a "little" stronger than that -- thank F***

Not exacly the way I prefer to test backups for recovery, rather do them when I want. :)

Mind in saying that, from memory, never had a WHS backup fail either.

Portable HDD might be the way IMHO. Or just a series of DVD for the image and a USB stick for your own stuff (less regular downloads which could just be redownloaded).

I always have backups. I have redirected "My" folders to a 2nd partition of the main drive. Whenever I sync it syncs this folder to my 2nd HDD. Occasionally I also sync it to my external HDD. Outlook email is also syned by the same way I think. I relocated the folder. I don't think you need to do the export import thingy. You just grab the original PST file.

A few laptops can also swap out the DVD for a 2nd HDD.
