| 1187010 | 2011-03-17 21:39:00 | I am amazed at the gall of Nzers overseas when there is some kind of emergency. They immediately expect the NZ govt to come to their rescue. Send planes, money, aid for them .. now..immediately. Many are in places where advisories have urged caution and go there anyway. Many have left NZ to live permanently overseas and suddenly it is NZ job to save them. Reference the whingers in Queensland who wanted NZ to give them benefits when flooded out. Latest one is the woman who wants out of Japan and left her passport in her home when she headed off.... expected a free one from the Embassy. My view is, if you go overseas you take full insurance and if you choose to live permanently overseas then support yourself from your new home. Why expect NZ, where you have made no financial contribution, to rescue you? |

If the person is a premenant resident of an overseas location the government should do absolutely NOTHING to help them in all cases except of HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES BY FOREIGN POWERS. If they are tourists they should have travel insurance. |

Well hello use some of that money to save yourself, you went for the money knowing the places are unstable, nobody forced you to go |

The only exception should be individuals working for the NZ Government. If the Government rescues you, then it shoulde be on the basis that you repay the taxpayer the cost of your rescue. I was in Cyprus with the RAF when the Turks invaded in the Kyrenia area in 1974, we moved thousands of civilians back to the UK from Akrotiri in RAF Hercules and VC10s over the 4 days following. They had to reimburse the British Government the price of an economy airfare and forfeited their passports until the debt was paid. They lost everything they left behind, one of our sergeants bought a near new MGB GT off a British Tourist for 50 pounds - the tourist got a bargain, he got 50 quid more than he would for just abandoning it, and the sergeant repatriated it as part of his effects at the end of his tour of duty. Incidently travel insurance does not normally cover losses due to war. |

| 1187015 | 2011-03-17 23:56:00 | Why cannot the New Zealand Government demand reimbursement of the costs of repatriation like the British Government did in the seventies. | KenESmith (6287) | ||

| 1187017 | 2011-03-18 00:14:00 | If you choose to work in another country on a years contract or even longer, you can get insurance though you would need to read carefully the small print to ensure that it covered working there, some insurance policies exclude work . Though anyone working in a place like Japan or the USA would be silly not to have some form of insurance to cover medical treatment and the like . I choose to make the Philippines my home base . I have insurance that covers me personally though I also have work insurance as well . If I needed to get out of the Philippines or Japan or somewhere else, I personally can make my own way out . Many don't though, they expect / demand or there families demand that the govt gets them out . It wouldn't be hard for the govt to put a stop on there passports to get at least a partial refund of costs recovered, yes, the do gooders would cry foul but as noted by others, if they want to live or work there, they should be responsible for looking after themselves when things go to custard . Same should apply for urgent replacement passports . If no money available to pay the local embassy, they could get a temp short term passport that would allow them to pass through Immigration each end and no further full passport available until costs had been recovered . We live in a PC correct world where common sense no longer seems to apply and when things turn to custard as they sometimes do, it is always the govt job to bail you out . |

The politicians of all colours need to take note and JK would get credit for such a policy from many- He's too ready with the handouts. |
