1187842 2011-03-22 08:19:00 What two languages Plod and how often? That seem s a fair chunk of timetable time which has to come from somewhere else, so what other subject is missing out?

OK, so he is taking Spanish and french which is for the first term only, 3 lessons a week each. We had to buy the french lesson book, but not the spanish. two languages are compulsory.
He also has to choose 4 other out of 5 subjects that get split among the other terms, design, hardtech, cooking and the likes of that.

PS. It has taken me the last hour and a half to extract this information from him. Its a pain in the arse having a conversation with a teenager when you get mostly grunts and groans

Interesting. Does he get a chance to carry them on in Yrs 11-13 if they turn out to be "his thing"? (first guess - probably not unless it's by correspondence).

What would be even more interesting is the rationale behind offering those particular subjects - and I bet I know the answer to that! ;) But, the bottom line is, you've probably not any way of doing anything about it if you want to. Still, if it suits him....

Yes, he is able to carry these on in the later years. I do believe it has only become compulsory in the last couple of years.

"The ministry's manager for secondary outcomes, Tony Turnock, says it has no plans to make languages compulsory".

Full article here (www.theaucklander.co.nz) - very interesting actually.

I just followed it thru' to get the situation clear in my own mind. I'm not trying to make any particular point.

I do seem to get that impression from the general standard of speaking and writing of English in New Zealand...........:clap
