1216472 2011-07-13 14:43:00 Well I've got it working decently, it's doing a defrag atm too.
Cleaned out the C drive throughout the day, as well as ran CCleaner over and over, it took a few hours to install 3 lots of updates from october 6th through to now, and there's still 41.6mb off it becoming SP2 (but I ain't wastin the B/W)

I've also got my sister's main pc, an HP media laptop with a core2 centrino 2ghz, 1gb ram (eugh) and an nvidia 8600gsmor something running vista ultimate.
Ccleaner had a ball with that one, 800 registry issues and 13gb of files removed on the first sweep, but then it's gone through a few hands before hers so was to be expected.

I didn't get chance to update that one, it screeched to a standstill at scanning for updates for about half an hour before I gave up, although that was prior to the pillaging by ccleaner. But now it'd be using my bandwidth, not the ex's.

Still, running MBAM on that one atm. Gonna go check on it then go to bed.
I've uninstalled a heap of crap, cleaned up alot of the file structures and all that (old install folders EVERYWHERE) and reduced the startup programs by about another 5 or 6 entries (which I did when she first got it, although it's had more pop up again as it's been auto updating in some cases, GOD I HATE PROGRAMS THAT DO THAT, ADOBE I AM SHOOTING YOU WITH A SHOTGUN, IF I DISABLED YOUR CRAPPY PROGRAM PRE LOADING ONCE I OBVIOUSLY DONT WANT IT SO STOP RE SETTING IT AS IF IM SOME SORT OF SPASTIC)

Anyway yeah. Made progress. I also cleaned the screens. I think I stuck a pixel on the older one but ohwell.

1216473 2011-07-13 14:47:00 Oh and seperate from the rant, what's gonna be more useful; a recently expired nod 32 antivirus, or MSSE? 8ftmetalhaed (14526)
1216474 2011-07-13 21:18:00 An Un-expired NOD32. :p

MSSE would be better, at least it's getting the latest definition updates.

1216475 2011-07-13 22:38:00 Maybe run anti-frustration software, e.g. soluto (www.soluto.com/) (PCWorld review (http: s.html)) or bootviz (majorgeeks.com) (XP), to help reduce boot up times. kahawai chaser (3545)
1216476 2011-07-15 04:44:00 soluto on the hp laptop didn't do much, so I uninstalled it.

I installed MSSE and updated it, but I'm currently waiting for this damn thing to shut down. It takes a good 5 minutes to boot, and even longer to shut down.
It has about 300mb of windows updates to do, probably more, but I don't have the bandwidth to do it unfortunately.

It has basically the minimum amount of software running as far as i can tell, but it's almost as slow (if not slower, actually) than the old laptop.

Unfortunately, I can't do a complete reinstall, because it has office on it and my sister needs office for uni since she uses word and onenote and all that, but as it was given to her she doesn't have the license or anything.

1216477 2011-07-15 04:48:00 If XP is on it install this

www.microsoft.com

It may shutdown faster
Speedy Gonzales (78)
1216478 2011-07-15 04:55:00 vista ultimate, unfortunately. and home basic on the older one. 8ftmetalhaed (14526)
1216479 2011-07-15 05:13:00 speedy, since you're here, have a HJT log.

1216480 2011-07-15 07:30:00 I would install SP2 for a start, since SP1 is no longer supported (I think support ended on Tuesday)

There's nothing in startup?

Disable windows search / indexing in services
Speedy Gonzales (78)
1216481 2011-07-15 11:25:00 I would do so, but unfortunately I'm not willing to waste my bandwidth. Hence my trying to do it two days ago, as it wasn't on my cap.

I did cull a few things from startup but there's certainly a few things there. MSSE, nvidia drivers, and a couple other things, but everything non-essential I either uninstalled or disabled.

I'll pull indexing when I get a minute, I'll do that for the acer too when I'm down there next.

Anything else you can think of?
If not, cheers for the help, and I'll get onto it asap.
