1187371 2011-03-20 19:21:00 Unfortunately cheap rugged and large buttons don't come in one phone anymore. those trusty nokias aren't in the game :(

Ok. In order of importance:

1)LOUD
2)Rugged
3)Reasonable buttons - no smartphones.

1187375 2011-03-20 20:51:00 I still reckon you've got to go a long way to beat the Nokia 2730 (store.telecom.co.nz) for a good cheap phone. My experience with the telecom branded phones has been awful. I'm sure that one is hardy, but the UI of the ones I've used has been terrible. Maybe the newer ones will be a bit better though.

A mate who's a builder has one of those nokias and it gets dropped etc, it's still going fine. As for how loud it is, go into a Telecom store and ask to test one out. Everyone's definition of loud is different.

1187377 2011-03-21 00:18:00 I've got the Nokia 2730 classic here. Got it when I changed to Telstra. Altho I wont be using it, till the 2 yrs is up (from Dec last year).

Then I'll change it to prepaid with someone else. The features on it arent too bad tho. Well its got more than the telecom prepaid I use. Easy to use and well at least you can update its firmware / software. But it doesnt come with the USB cable to connect it. But, if you get this, don't get the cable from Vodafone (looks like they sell it, but it's $50 !). I got mine from Surplustronics for $9

1187378 2011-03-21 01:08:00 The Nokia has buttons that would drive him crazy.
Loud? Super loud - he's half deaf. Your normal landline phone ringer - he can't hear it from any other room than the one it is in.

Anyway read a million user reviews, seems to be a Samsung SGH-a657.

The R90 has predictive txt only, as he ise still learning to txt normally - no.

The newer Samsung, um I forget.

needed reasonable buttons, LOUD everything, no awkward accidently press features he won't use.

Etc.
Hate trying to find him phones............

1187379 2011-03-21 02:08:00 For loud inbound speech then I guess he can always put it in handsfree mode with it by his ear. Loud ringing. How would a combination of vibrate and ringing go?? Also i have heard some very loud ring tones. I guess you could always take an existing one and crank up the volume by 100% percent and then load it into the fone.. paulw (1826)
