| 1216462 | 2011-07-12 21:31:00 | I'm headed to my sister's house in about half an hour or so to help her move, and I'm going to set the laptop she gave my nephew updating while I work. But i'm wondering if there's anything I can do to speed the damn thing up, because it's frustratingly slow. I ran CCleaner on it a few days ago when I was there last, and it removed about 3gb of temp files and the like, and I also downloaded MSSE and installed it, replacing the old Norton install I did when she bought it (spare license) although it didn't appear to be working when I left. When she first bought it, I culled most of the Acer bloatware too. It's ones of THOSE laptops, running vista home basic on a celeron 2.2ghz or something, with intel integrated graphics and i think 512mb of ram. I would simply give her an XP license I have, but I might need that in future, and linux isn't an option unfortunately. Admittedly it might seem a bit pointless doing this, but I'm saving myself possible future headaches so it's gonna be worth it later on, so if anyone has ideas, let's hear em :) oh and edit - more ram isn't an option either, unless someone's got some DDR2 lying around I can have (hah) |

There isn't really anyway to speed it up because of the specs... There might be a virus of some sort in the computer - run MalwareBytes/Spybot/Full scan MSE. |

| 1216465 | 2011-07-12 22:56:00 | Yes its a disgrace selling Vista machines with 512M, HP , DSE : shame on you. MS : you are fully to Blame for letting Vista be install on completely under-specced slow machines. Thats the main reason Vista (& therefore MS)has now got such a bad reputation Mr Gates . My mother also bought one of 'those' lappies, despite my suggestions to spend more than $550 on a new 15" laptop. Completely unusable with 512M, even with 2G RAM it was barely fast enough to run vista. I suspect the HD is also horrendously slow. Basicly a lemon. HP also used to sell a Vista 1.6Ghz Celeron/512M PC with Nortons preloded on it...now that was one dog of a PC. Poor guy trying to use it for CAD when I was asked to speed it up. These famous Brand Companies really didnt care what crap they sold. |

| 1216466 | 2011-07-12 23:02:00 | Exactly - This is the main reason Vista got such a bad rap when it first came out, manufacturers just weren't speccing the machines up enough. XP can run on 128Mb RAM, but who the hell would want to do that??? Add 1GB RAM minimum to that laptop, 2GB if you can, you'll notice a big difference. The whole notebook to be honest is pretty rubbish, but you'll be able to make it usable with a RAM upgrade. |

Either get a lighter OS or get more RAM. That is simply all you can do. 512MB I would not consider as enough even for home basic (and due to no doubt having integrated video it will be less than 512MB anyway) |
