1187850 2011-03-20 22:10:00 Hi guys

I am a windows guy and at my age (60) and with all the Office stuff I have and all the programs and utilties I would never change to Mac.

But a friend of mine similar age just bought a Apple desktop two days ago.

He had an old PC with 98 on it and complained that nothing worked. I kept telling him to upgrade to XP then 7.

But he has got sucked in with the "ease of use" of Mac and the way the salesman told him everything works with just one click right out of the box and the fact that he wont get any viruses now and that all the software is on the Mac and he won't need to buy any more. And he loves his tiny keyboard,

What is the general opinion of the PCWorld members who know a bit about Macs ? For general users not gamers etc.

1187851 2011-03-20 22:22:00 Well, I really like, and enjoy using my Windows machine, but I love my cutesy w00tsey little Macbook! I can do everything I want to on both machines, but I do spend a lot more time on the Windows one, constantly having to keep it updated and run scans and use a LOT more security on it than I do the Mac.

I do feel however, that neither is better nor worse than the other, they just have different uses.

1187852 2011-03-20 22:28:00 I used Macs from 1985 till about 2004 or so, but had to change because of the demands of my clients. My wife used Macs for years as a teacher.

I am out of date with what the MacOS is like now, but when I changed over I certainly missed the ease of use and the attractive interface. Similarly, as far as Windows is concerned, I am still using WinXP, so have no experience with either Vista or Win7. I tried Linux, but for reasons noted below, I decided it wasn't for me.

I am not interested in playing around with a computer - I just want it to be stable and work the way I want it to. My Macs (about 6 models overall, including a clone) all worked happily, and met my needs. I thought it was really easy to learn how to work on a Mac; but Microsoft have plagiarised so much of the Mac's interface that there seems little difference nowadays (from what I have seen anyway).

I am not a gamer - I have heard it said that there are less games available for Macs, but that is of no relevance to me.

Overall, I would happily go back to MacOS, and would recommend it for other users provided the economics stacked up, and that is my single criticism.

I did not like the fact that when I used Macs I had to change over the whole shebang all at once when I wanted to upgrade - in those days anyway, it was difficult to simply change individual components. My current Windows box is like George Washington's axe - most of the components have been upgraded at some stage or other, and that seems a more economic way to go if you think about the cost of running a computer over time, rather than restricting yourself to the cost of the initial purchase.

1187853 2011-03-21 00:07:00 If value for money, performance, preferred specs, and a wide selection of programs aren't part of the criteria then a Mac makes some sense.....:waughh:

I'm sure the Mac OS is a fine piece of software.

1187854 2011-03-21 01:14:00 I ran a hacked copy of OSX on my Athlon 64 machine for a couple of weeks a few years ago, then formatted the drive, I consider it a trial version, rather than piracy.

The OS is quite nice, easy to use but seems restrictive if you want to do anything advanced.

Stability was good considering it was running on completely unofficial hardware.

If you are interested in trying an alternative OS which may be 'easier' or less worry to do with viruses than Windows I would strongly suggest trying Ubuntu first.

It's also easy to use but free, and you don't need new hardware ;)

In fact the version scheduled for release next month has a GUI that acts quite like OSX by default.

1187855 2011-03-21 01:35:00 I would not recommend Linux for an older person with limited computer experience .
The Mac OS X would be ideal, very stable and reliable, comes with a great display, built in web cam and wireless, and everything you need for email and web browsing . The thing that makes it so stable and trouble free is that all hardware and installed applications are designed and intergrated to all work seamlessly together .

How is he enjoying it Digby, if he needs any help with anything there are many Mac users here who can help .
