1189080 2011-03-24 21:19:00 Just got a phone call from the mechanic, saying the part for our dead car arrived but was DOA and they can't source another part cheaply. They can re-condition the old part but it will probably cost about as much as the cars worth if not more.

So it looks like a new car is needed, which is just great on top of having no permanent job and no work at all for over 2 months. My birthday resolution looks like applying for the dole.

I'm not a car person, so i wouldn't know where to start, But the part they had sourced was second hand, and doing a bit of research online it does appear that even second hand its an expensive part . Diesel fuel pump/ injector for a 16 year old holden astra euro diesel, besides apparently there a few bits and pieces that should be replaced .

And on a different note

Where do you go to get fuel consumption/ reliability figures from

Have a look on trademe, some dealers have these which is really quite helpful

Pick-a Part can be a useful source of parts.

Try www.fueleconomy.gov (note that it's in mpg and it's an American site - but most of our cars are sold there anyway, except the Holdens and Fords. Also note that if you live in a hilly city like Wellington, your figures will be MUCH worse)

For newer cars, http://www.rightcar.govt.nz/
