| 1189465 | 2011-03-27 20:31:00 | If you install Rockbox (Open source firmware) onto an iPod you can use it with whichever program you like and it won't require file conversion either.Depends which model of iPod you have though; Rockbox doesn't run on all of them, especially the newer ones. | Erayd (23) | ||

A 2nd hand older model on which Rockbox would run might be a lot cheaper too... I hopefully will be trying this out soon actually, I recently acquired an iPod nano with a broken screen.. hope to replace this and get it working. It's supported by Rockbox as it's 1st Generation. |

| 1189467 | 2011-03-28 02:55:00 | You see, we didn't know about this iTunes/iPod bizzo. So, if she bought an iPod but just wants stuff from her cd's, does iTunes have to do the ripping? What exactly does iTunes do? Thanks itunes will organise your songs, and while it isn't drag and drop from the likes of explorer. Effectively once the ipod is connected you can drag and drop with itunes. It will also rip your cd's for you. but you can use other programs. You can also just direct itunes to an existing music library if you already have one. BillyT uses itunes for ripping and he is as anti apple as you can get, so it must be doing something right |

The only worthwhile place to find an Apple is stewed with your breakfast cereal! However, I still haven't found anything better than iTunes, but it was a bit of a marathon to get the latest version set up to rip to MP3 instead of MP4a, to find where it hid the ripped files, and change that to where I wanted them but I got it in the end. It was much more obscure than the older version I had. I can provide all the shortcuts and blood-pressure points if you want. It is certainly the fastest and easiest ripper I have used. Once set up it starts when you insert the CD, gets the album and track names, and ejects the CD when finished, making for virtually seamless ripping. Noise cancelling headphones are the greatest fatigue reducer you can get for long flights. They continue to reduce external noise while in use with your MP3 player or watching TV too. I have a set of Bose Quiet Comforts but there some equally good types out there at a much lower price so do a search and check the reviews. When I flew Singapore Airlines to India on a government job they provided complimentary NC headphones but that was in business class. You need several hours of playing time because there is not only the flight time to consider, there is also the hanging around airports etc. I have an iRiver H320 which will run up to 8 hours on a charge and will also run off an external battery pack. This is useful if the plane doesn't provide power for a laptop, and a universal plug and multivoltage charger is essential for travelling. Our plug is pretty much unique to NZ and OZ.
