1218531 2011-07-24 11:36:00 Why not just get someone to rebuild the battery pack for you, or even rebuild it yourself?

I've rebuilt other battery packs, but the Libretto battery is rather small and does not seem to lend itself very well to amateur dismantling .

Allowing that I get it apart safely, it actually has three cells in series inside (I can part one seam wide enough to see inside) and it is nominally a 10 . 8 volt 1200mAh battery, so they are 3 . 6 volts per cell .

Unfortunately, an extensive web search has failed to turn up any 3 . 6 volt 1200mAhr (or better) NiMH cells for sale . There are probably some out there somewhere, but the more obscure the seller, the less likely they are to have the capacity or the lifespan required .

Cheers

1218532 2011-07-24 12:29:00 That's because they are Lithium-ion not NiMH I think.

"Li-Ion (and Li-Po) batteries are leading edge battery technology and consists ideal selection in use on portable computers and cellular phones due to their high energy density and high voltage. A typical Li-Ion cell is rated at 3,6V and this is three times more than the typical NiCd or NiMH cell voltage (1,2V)."

1218533 2011-07-24 12:30:00 How big are the cells? You might be able to connect nine smaller 1 . 2v NiMH cells in series instead . . .

I'm sure Jaycar used to sell tabbed versions of NiMHs at some point too . . .

What about Farnell or RS? (Though I guess they would want several limbs)

Libretto 50 is a rather old machine, I'm pretty sure they did use NiMH back then . It's only the newer devices that have Lithium-based packs .

1218534 2011-07-24 12:55:00 The 10.8 volts gives it away, also being 10.8 is very easy to run off a car battery 12volts without drama of switching regulators etc, very convenient. Only 3 Lithium-ion cells required.

I once did professional design work for NiCd battery packs "in another lifetime" so I know a bit about this and what to look for.

Lithium-ion came out about 1985, my crap old Toshiba Pentium III TE2000 came out 10 years ago with Win98SE and it has a Lithium-ion battery pack.

1218535 2011-07-24 13:58:00 I guess you're right about this: resource.toshiba-europe.com

"Removable lithium-ion batteries, up to 2 hrs battery life"

Although, my old Panasonic cordless phone does have a NiCd pack which looks very similar to 1 AA however it's actually 3x 1/3 AAs in a single stick, so it's not impossible to get a single-cell appearance pack of 3.6v without being Li-Ion.

1218536 2011-07-25 00:03:00 Have you tried www.laptopbattery.co.nz
WT
there is another laptop battery shop which is called: http://www.laptop-battery-shop.co.nz
Have ordered a battery some 14 days ago and is suposedly on its way from HK(track and trace).
So if you need something rather urgent I'm not to sure about this one.:(

1218537 2011-07-25 03:15:00 If you are willing to re-build yourself there are plenty of Youtube vids and ebay has plenty of Li-ion cells on sale.

Even a couple of 2 pack used batteries!

1218538 2011-07-25 03:25:00 They are NiMH, not Lithium and are longer and fatter than a AA NiCad.

They have to fit inside a 20cm long space including interconnections so that means single 1.2 volt cells no longer than 320mm, allowing for interconnections. I don't think such beasts exist, especailly with 1200mAhr capacity.

I took a look at http://www.laptop-battery-shop.co.nz on whois and didn't find enough info to make me trust them, but who knows?

Cheers
