:)

Ooh, such a lot of life destruction! But, it is the only way to ensure the survival of the fittest! Yes you need to get rid of about 90% of the eggs that are laid on the plant, then the surviving ones will have more food etc.

I love the Monarchs and it so interesting to see the chrysalises hatch into the butterflies. I remember when I was a kid and my dad told us all about the Monarchs and encouraged us to have them in the house. We had them all over the place. He then showed us what to do with all the butterflies when they hatched.

1188729 2011-03-24 05:14:00 If they are quite big, you can feed them slivers of pumpkin, and they can live on that and will develop fully. robbyp (2751)
1188730 2011-03-24 05:54:00 There's a tree not too far from here that attracts hundreds if not thousands of Monarchs. I have no idea of what the tree is. When the tree is in shadow, the sun obscured by a cloud, the monarchs close their wings, all the colour dissipates. When the cloud moves on, the sun comes out, and all the monarchs open their wings again, a glorious display once more. :) WalOne (4202)

1188732 2011-03-24 07:59:00 Monarch caterpillars and watching their transition into butterflies is one of the pleasures of having a garden (see my avatar?). Last year our swan plants actually grew swans that burst and spread seed all over the garden. This year we have dozens of swan plants, but every single one of them has been completely denuded by the caterpillars. There are pupae everywhere.

We're hoping for an avalanche of butterflies in a week or so.
