1188652 2011-03-23 07:37:00 At one stage I had a email filter to move any email which started with FWD: or FW: to my spam folder.

I have done that too, but then I miss the ones that are important and that I am expecting to receive.
I think that some people get offended if you tell them straight that you don't want other people's crap forwarded on to you. Even if they are well meaning.

1188653 2011-03-23 07:41:00 Dont know if you missd it - but my post #10 gives the solutions to the statement in the last post you made. wainuitech (129)
1188654 2011-03-23 07:45:00 Following on from what Bobh wrote -- simple solution, and you wont offend anyone - use something like Mailwasher ( kiwi guy designed it to) :)

It shows you what mails are there before they come through - any you dont want, simply put a tick on the delete - and hit washmail - they will be auto deleted. BUT if there is a legit mail that you may want from the same person, you can allow it through.

I on average would get 50+ mails a day (often more) - but only about half a dozen I will actually allow through. The people sending them wont ever know you deleted them.

See the attachment - sometimes that crowd have good articles, but in this case I dont want it, so ticked delete - hit wash - and gone. (just cleared out 20 odd before coming on here)

Theres two versions of mailwasher, the free one that has an advertising banner along the top, or the Paid one as I have.

Thanks Wainuitech, yes I did use mailwasher for a while when I was using OE6. I currently have Gmail and Hotmail accounts and haven't tried it on those. (Will it work on those?)
I would really like to educate people not to send them in the beginning, and have tried the direct approach. Some of them tend to ignore the request for some reason.

1188655 2011-03-23 07:45:00 I found that my method had a better outcome... no need to bother blocking as they don't get sent anymore! Agent_24 (57)
1188656 2011-03-23 07:51:00 I used to get chain mail, until I sent the main offender an email detaling how sending your email address to 100 people or so, any of which could potentially have an emaiil-harvesting spambot virus on their PC is a good way to end up with a ton of spam...

They shut up and stopped sending them after that...

 Good idea too, but I guess some people just take no notice. I wonder if sending them the instructions on "how to remove someone from a mailing list" would be a good hint?

Mailwasher "should" work on gmail and Hotmail (live mail) as long as they are coming into your computer Via an email program, as mailwasher only looks at whats on the persons account on the appropriate server.

It wont work if you only use web based, as in sign into Gmail/Live mail Via a browser.

Reminds of one guy a few years back that used to send huge jokes amost daily - in the end I blacklisted him in mailwasher and bounced them back - I did ask nicely to stop sending so many - after a while he called me and asked had I changed my email -- He got told "not so nicely" why they were being bounced ;)

1188658 2011-03-23 08:58:00 I guess it's not a huge problem, just annoying . I can access my gmail either online or on Apple mail on my lappy. Hotmail remains on the web. In Apple mail I can "bounce" them if I want, so I could try that. It's funny but they mostly seem to come from facebook contacts, but not my family, they know better!
Both gmail and hotmail handle the spam really well and I get hardly any in my inboxes.
Thanks for your constructive suggestions

1188659 2011-03-23 09:18:00 In your Facebook settings I think you can turn off email notifications. I also had someone always sending me 21 questions notifications from Facebook which I have also turned off.
BTW writing this from Firefox 4 alot faster than IE9.

1188660 2011-03-23 10:33:00 Why not just hit the reply button (not Reply All, that would be rude). Several times, but about an hour apart so they don't think it was an accident.

When they ask why you are sending them the same message 7 (for instance) times, this gives you an opportunity to explain how you feel about this sort of email. Chances are they will empathize and might even take you off their distribution list.

I find these emails generally come from well-meaning people, sometimes lonely or isolated, and this is their way of 'staying in touch' with their friends.

It's just a written form of gossip, really...

1188661 2011-03-23 10:44:00 I'm not entirely clear LL whether you don't want Fwd emails at all or you object to the emails not being cleaned up.

My own experience over many years is to simply grin and bear it. Nobody I've tried to educate takes it well and they simply don't send anything further.

Mailwasher works well for filtering.

I do take some pleasure in tidying up fwd jokes by removing previous addresses and editing the code to remove the vertical inset blue lines, and >> marks.
