| 1217649 | 2011-07-19 06:34:00 | Ahhhhhhh, where do I start? :rolleyes: Ok, got a Mates Computer that simply won’t boot . It ran XP SP3 when it last worked but now on normal boot it locks up at the Windows Screen where the dots normally run across . When trying to boot into Safe Mode it locks up at the load screen with the last entry being: Multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)Partition(1)\Windows\System 32\Drivers\AVGIDSEH . sys . Fine thinks I, I’ll do a Repair Install from the Windows CD . Oh no I won’t, even though the DVD R/W is first boot in BIOS I get: “Searching for Boot Record from CD ROM” . Then it continues with normal start-up and locks up again . Grrrrrrrrrrrrr! So, I tried a Hirens Boot Disk same outcome, couldn’t find Boot Record and carried on with normal start-up which of course froze . Right, I then slaved the HDD to a working computer and run chkdsk D:/r and the disk came up OK as far as I could tell . No bad sectors anyway . Ok, as a stab in the dark I thought I’d try and defrag it . Got to 25% and notice comes up with a report of a heap of files that couldn’t be defrag’d . The HDD is 85% full and looking at the screen analysis is a complete shambles probably never having been defraged . Anyway, I’ve run out of ideas so anything dumb I’ve overlooked? All suggestions appreciated . :thanks |

| 1217650 | 2011-07-19 06:46:00 | I would try another CD/DVD drive as it sounds like it is having problems reading the discs. Then try the Windows repair again. |

I would say an AVG update is the cause Here's people who had the same prob forums.cnet.com This also affected 64 bit systems (an update made them unbootable) Try what someone did Step by step I did this: 1) Reboot PC, hold f8 to enter safe mode 2) start computer with limited networking etc. 3) Computer starts normally, so I execute 'msconfig' from the run menu 4) Disable the 2 or 3 AVG related services only, I did not disable anything else. 5) Reboot, and the PC works fine, does not hang. I would also once you can get into windows, use the AVG removal tool |

| 1217655 | 2011-07-19 21:07:00 | Update. Dahhhhhh, caught out by the old double whammy trick. :groan: Firstly, spot on CYaBro, :thumbs: the bl..dy DVD Drive wasn’t reading the disk. A replacement CD Drive fixed that and I can now boot from a CD which is a help. However, I’m still working on the other problem. I tried a Repair Install (now I can actually boot from the CD Drive) but wouldn’t you know it, all went well until the computer rebooted to complete the repair and the damn thing hung. Just like the original fault grrrrrrrrrr! So, back to the drawing board and some reading on this AVG problem. I’ll update the situation later. In the meantime :thanks everyone for your input. |

| 1217656 | 2011-07-19 22:44:00 | You could always try rebuilding the boot.ini -- may or may not fix the problem, as rebuilding it "should" remove the option for AVG to start up. This site tells you how (pcsupport.about.com) as well as here (www.computerhope.com) The suggestion I posted earlier re the system restore - forget that now, as since you have done a repair install, which hasn't changed the boot files, all restore points that would have wound back the computer to before AVG updating will have been wiped. :crying Oh BTW -- if the computer had IE8 installed, theres a chance it will hang after a repair install. This happens because the repair install on the XP CD has an earlier version of IE. There is a way to fix that :) I have it stored someplace:nerd: |

| 1217657 | 2011-07-20 00:13:00 | just an idea: you could use hdd to usb docking>>www.pcstats.com you can also find it as a cable, it costs about 17 euros (no idea in nZ dollars) its really useful thing and it allows you to connect hdd via usb so you can just format it if there is no need to keep the data on hdd |

| 1217658 | 2011-07-20 05:30:00 | Worst case scenario, ask your mate whats on the machine he needs to keep, slave it to another pc, copy stuff across, wipe it, clean install, use a different antivirus.... Sometimes the time it takes trying to fix stuff is 10 times worse than just starting over. Probably the hardest thing to track down is savegames, most other stuff is easy to find even if you just go through folders 1 by 1. |
