1217429 2011-07-18 00:01:00 I am wondering what to do about Broadband. History follows.
1] With Orcon, severe latency not resolved.
2] Xtra, Broadband Ok but slow and expensive.
3] Vodafone, they replaced the cable from the road to the house. Broadband & phone good at first, then phone went off for a week & Broadband slowed down.
4] Orcon, started out well with good phone and 5Mbps broadband, reasonable charges. Broadband dropped to 4.6Mbps for a while, but is now 2.2Mbps (apparently the exchange has moved further away from my house!). Also has huge latency but worst of all it keeps stopping which makes watching the simplest videos almost impossible and FTP uploads erratic. They have tried everything, including interleaving but no change. I have tried 3 modems, changed filters, changed cables, used 3 computers, no change!
My neighbor also has the same problems with Orcon but is not worried as he only uses his computer for email, news reading and trade me,
Should I go back to Telecom? They have no one to pass the buck to!

1217430 2011-07-18 00:08:00 I would look at getting a master splitter installed and see if that fixes the issues.
I've done a few in the last couple of months, for people that have had similar issues to you, and since then they have had no problems.

1217432 2011-07-18 00:25:00 Is it the connection speed that has dropped, or are thse speeds you quote from something like speedtest? The reason I ask is if the connection speed has dropped then something has changed physically, but if it has stayed the same and the speedtest results have dropped then that is more to do with bandwidth & loading on the ISP equipment (and would improve during offpeak times) in which case only an ISP change would help (and maybe not then).

If the connection speed has gone from 5 to 2.2 you need to get on their case about it, there is nothing you can do except badger them or change/threaten to change ISP.

A few Ideas that may or may not be helpful:
1. If the exchange has recently been upgraded some older modems unfortunately perform poorly if at all on the newer hardware. It may be worth looking in to.

2. Connection speed is effected by cable loading, the more customers get broadband on the same cable the lower the connection speed. This should be a small thing but can add up on longer cable runs. Is it possible a lot more people have signed up?

3. 5M is ok, but not great for ADSL2+ which can hit around 24M (mine is 16) so you are probably 2-3KM or more from the cabinet or exchange if you connect at that speed. You could ask if there are plans to install a cabinet in your area in the near future and if so when.

4. If the phone is at all noisy try reporting that as a fault also, sometimes that can work to get someone looking at your cable pair.

5. Talk to your ISP again and tell them how frustrated you are getting. Ask if they can have the pair changed which would hopefully eliminate cable faults as the cause or alternatively have someone look at it. I believe they pass it on to telecom so it can take a while but it's worth a crack.

6. Have another look at your setup, is there anything around the modem you changed that could have affected the speed? Any sources of RF interference near the modem? - cordless phones, miocrowaves, cellphone parked on top of it, etc....

7. Just as a random thing, in rural areas there are sometimes issues with poorly earthed electric fences running parrallel to phone cables, causing ticking on the line and playing havoc with digital services.

The attainable rate is quite a lot higher than the actual rate, (see attachment) which is a bit higher than the online speed tests . The attainable rate used to be between 6 & 7 and the actual rate was 4 . 6 to 5 . Telephone line has always rustled after heavy rain but is clear in dry spells, this does not seem to effect the line speed . Wiring has been replaced to the road junction and all sockets checked .

1217435 2011-07-18 11:26:00 Ouch that SNR is way low. No wonder you are having problems. 11-20dB is 'good'.

If you have a noisy line in the wet, sounds like you need to get another pair as in 5. of Dugimodo.

1217436 2011-07-19 07:27:00 Drama today!
I emailed Orcon that if the problem was not fixed by the end of the billing period I would consider changing my ISP. This prompted a phone call from a wise guy who said that he would change the connection from ADSL2 to ADSL and reset it. I promptly lost the phone connection with the Broadband. After a while it came back on and the speed on local servers had dropped to 1.4Mbps - Great!

After a while another person phoned and said "I believe you are having some problems with your Internet?" **!!*! Anyway, this guy did all sorts of tests and came to the conclusion that the fault was somewhere in the line from the server to my house road connection - exactly my conclusion. He restored the old setting pending further investigation, so at least it works now.

1217437 2011-07-20 00:35:00 Hang in there ... I've been battling with Chorus now for 4 months, 14 tech visits and things still suck terribly :( Chilling_Silence (9)
1217438 2011-07-20 10:33:00 Chill, sounds like Chorus are using you for target practice! Maybe you're the final test for their trainees? But, perhaps not, as they would all have failed.

"My Internet is slow" sure can make techs' blood run cold, eh. Especially if the complainant is not with Telecom. Ping pong comes to mind.

Anyway, good luck mzee.
