| 1220036 | 2011-07-30 07:16:00 | Hi all. Wanting to upgrade the hard drive in netbook. At moment it has a Seagate Momentus 250-GB sata hdd. Im not to worryed about lots of storage as Im running a 32gb SD card in netbook for storing files on and wireless network to main pc. What Im wanting to know is it worth going SSD or just get the fastest 2.5 hdd. Also whats the lifespan of a SSD when running windows and software on it? Looking at spending $50 to $200 on drive. Thanks |

| 1220044 | 2011-07-30 21:05:00 | SSD far more bump-tolerant than a HDD - very relevant when in a laptop, howver, SSD typically expensive, and has limited write-rewrite lifecycle (correct me if I'm out of date in that regard). I'm assuming W7 has had more tuning to limit the constant writes that Windows makes to the drive. Greater use of onboard RAM cache would be beneficial wrt SSD lifespan. |

| 1220045 | 2011-07-31 02:01:00 | I wouldn't worry too much about the lifetime of an SSD, they will generally last as long as, if not longer than, a hard drive. the primary thing you should be concerned with is trim support (or lack thereof) in Windows xp. As far as I know, your best option is an Intel or ocz drives as they have tools which you need to run every couple days, which is similar to trim in Windows 7. also you'll need to disable automatic disk defragmenting in xp. either that, or upgrade to Windows 7 :) :pf1mobmini: |
