| 1191193 | 2011-04-02 22:48:00 | It is true, and I'm well aware that they can't sustain their lifestyle choice until retirement age, But by that time the career criminal has had hundreds if not thousands of victims, ruined a few lives, and cost society millions of dollars. Most "career" criminals spend more time in jail than out of it, and they're largely people who commit relatively easily detected crimes. The violent offenders that make the headlines generally go to jail for long periods, albeit perhaps not as long as many would like. That simply comes down to the cost of keeping an offender in jail versus the risk of releasing them, and the decision on where the correct balance lies is made by politicians (not Judges). As much as we'd all like there to be no crime, it is unfortunately a fact of life. |

Very few pop up out of nowhere and start a life of crime at a mature age, instead they have a long list of offending. This happens because the system is geared to keep them in the community, and judges are a huge part of that system, Your claim that they do everything they are capable of isn't amusing. Sure, Crime is a fact of life, But our focus should not be on "whats best" for the piece of **** who done the crime, but on ensuring they are stopped. Whatever that requires, that is what should be done. And for many, a bullet in the skull would be a fine option. |

Judges of course have some discretion as they have to interpret the law, the politicians however make the law. So if you want the death penalty a Judge can't impose it, you need to get a political party that supports what you want and get them voted into parliament. |

I have previously and you don't seem to be able to follow it because if I recall rightly you believe all prosecutors are lawyers. So all we have established is you don't know even the basics about the system your critisise. |

| 1191198 | 2011-04-03 03:02:00 | It starts off with kids not wearing bike helmets, police driving past and doing nothing about it graffiti vandalism then robberies. Has anyone in Auckland ever seen a maoris kid with a cycle helmet on? I know in 20 years of driving here haven't see one wear one yet. They are 50% of the prison population can anyone but me see the linkage? |
