1219846 2011-07-29 09:45:00 What does it matter if the infection make the flash drive useless,

it is worth trying Malwarebytes and MSSE or anything else before going to all the trouble of making a bootable CD .

There is no guarantee that Nod32 will pick up everything either .

Combofix is a great tool and will pick up infections that nothing else will

Spybot problems can arise if there is a complication of some sort .
What does it matter?
Well it renders the procedure useless before you have started . Easy to write to a USB drive, kind of hard to write to a CD .

It's hardly an effort to make a bootable CD . Very basic in fact .

Personally I don't try one or two, I run the lot .

One decent anti-virus, and I agree with Wainuitech there, NOD32 .

Then the anti-spywares . Spybot, which can't say I've ever had it have problems, what problems?, Malware Bytes, Superantispyware, and then other more specific tools .

I certainly wouldn't rely on any one on it's own, Combofix or whatever .

None of them will necessarily find everything and I can show you if need be certain tricky little coded things that nothing at all available at present will notice .

We aim for 99 . 999% and use several tools and if the thing is still unstable or suspicious then maybe you have to resort to retrieving their stuff and doing a fresh install in worst case scenarios .

NOD32 doesn't pick up everything, of course, it's an anti-virus . It won't see all malware for that reason . But it's damn good .

But of course depends whether you're bothering or not, IO know some "techs" who don't, they blithely assume one or at most 2 things are enough, don't test them, or can't be arsed and just wipe the PC without even trying .

1219847 2011-07-31 04:12:00 Regards MSSE - the download file is only 9.7MB. Is this the entire programme or is this .exe file the 'prompt' that then download the actual MSSE application from the net because remember, this computer we are discussing is not, and not, be connected to the net. If this 9.7MB file IS the application, I will also try this? Your advise is greatly appreciated... Aporosa (5671)
1219848 2011-07-31 04:38:00 MSSE if not on the Internet wont be of much use. Generally when you install it, it will want to do updates to the latest definitions before it will let you scan.

MSSE while its Ok for a free one, the previous options are a lot better.

1219849 2011-07-31 04:58:00 Thanks wainuitech. I have downloaded your Nod 32 Rescue Disc and Infrrecorder and will make the CD shortly. Just to clarify: Do I simply insert the Nod 32 Rescue CD into the 'problem' computer when switched off, then turn it on and the 'problem' computer will boot off the Nod 32 Rescue CD and automatically scann and fix the virus/issue?? Is that what this does, or does it reset the computer and wipe all of the personal data/photos etc??? Remember, this 'problem' computer (which boots ok, mostly runs ok, but is having USB port issues) can not connect to the internet. (from a VERY computer illiterate fala) Aporosa (5671)
1219850 2011-07-31 05:08:00 You might need to press F8 on the boot up to change the boot order to boot from CD first as it is most likely set to boot from the hard drive first. Try it and if it boots to windows shut down and the do the F8 option gary67 (56)
