2011-04-02 09:06:00 | so if we substitute "pretty poor standard" for "limited capabilities"....... :) If you like. If oil is found, and it is of similar grade to that which is currently exported, then indeed an expansion of Marsden Point capabilities would be needed to handle the refining of the light crude, otherwise it would be exported. :clap

Some have real big motors on those small boats! A bit like sending a nuclear sub to protest about the French bomb tests (a few years ago, of course) Ken |

2011-04-03 03:08:00 | Back to the real question. Do we want to drill for Oil off the coast or not? And if the Maorii own the seabed do they own what's under the seabed as I'm reasonably sure the oil and/or gas are not on top of the seabed or no holes need to be drilled. They are entirely welcome to put a koha collector at the seabed-sea interface of every well, and another at the bottom of each well. Perhaps you could start the ball rolling by offering to train the graduates of that establishment you wouldn't mind at the bottom of your garden? PS: I can't stand Maoris, except the ones I've met.

2011-04-03 04:16:00 | I am certainly in favour of oil exploration in NZ waters, and hope the drillers are successful. BUT, what nobody has mentioned is that any oil found DOES NOT belong to NZ. The oil belongs to the company which has put up the billions of dollars to pay for the drilling of many dry holes before any oil strike is made. What that company does with the oil is up to them. NZ receives only royalties for oil or gas extracted. So where it is refined depends on the arrangements drillers have with refining companies. By the way Metla, NZ Refining Company is a very high standard refiner, although small in comparison with other wordwide refineries. The grade of oil supplied as feedstock is dictated by the shareholding companies, who are BP New Zealand, Mobil Oil NZ, Greenstone Energy Holdings (was Shell), Chevron NZ, and many individual shareholders including myself. The company has had a programme of constant renewal and improvement, and a reading of the annual report online could be of benefit to any who are interested.

2011-04-03 09:30:00 | I think you will find our refineries are of a pretty poor standard and that oil harvested locally is shipped elsewhere to be refined while we buy oil from international markets that can be handled by our refineries. Makes perfect sense..,.... I don't know if it is a poor standard or not but the oil here can not be refined here because of the grade it is. The other problem is the Govt. has not retained enough of the rights to the oil here. A guy told me a number of years ago that there is as much oil around NZ as the Gulf.
