1191163 2011-04-01 05:20:00 It appears that Police are are happy with the reduced crime figures for 2010.

Down the bottom of the report it said that only slightly over a third of crimes were solved so I can't see why they are happy.

I think there just might be a correlation between that and "reported crimes".

Could be fewer people are reporting crimes because things don't get solved either way?

You could be 100% correct there.

Quite a few crimes are unreported. I know of two a couple of days ago. Two attempts to steal petrol from cars parked outside owner's house.

Neither were reported.

So if it was not reported it didn't happen.

1191166 2011-04-01 08:30:00 I think that a lot of people do not report crimes because they think or know that the Police will not or cannot do anything about it. I know of cases where crime has been reported and the Police do not even take a statement so the incident does not become part of their statistics. Minor crimes are not being dealt with which gives young people the impression that the Police will do nothing about their criminal behaviour. They get away with committing minor crimes and this causes them to carry on and commit more serious crimes. There is no early intervention.

I do think that reported crime has decreased because the public have less confidence in the Police.

To solve this problem what is needed;

1. More Police.

2. Give the Police the budget they need to do their job.

3. A statement needs to be taken whenever a member of the public reports a problem so that every incident becomes part of the statistics.

Anyway, there is a link on the page it went to that will get you the video.

Maybe someone can fix it?

1191169 2011-04-01 22:56:00 Ministry of Justice does a Crime and Safety survey (www.justice.govt.nz) that records reported and non-reported crime. Twelvevolts (5457)

I cannot agree sorry.

There are enough police already. They just need to use them more effectively.

Stop using them on traffic duties would be a start. Running around issuing tickets for minor traffic offenses is not a good use of police time.
It does nothing to help law and order and alienates the very people that the police need to help them.

Agreed. Bring back the MOT traffic cops.
