1193811 2011-04-12 08:19:00 On Close Up tonight there was an item about Jet Star passengers in wheelchairs . Two wheelchair passengers had problems getting on their flight because they did not have caregivers .

The pair, along with their producer, were on their way to meet with disability groups in Wellington about a government campaign to change attitudes towards disabled people .

1193812 2011-04-12 08:32:00 Looks like they disregarded the conditions of sale on their ticket, looks like a beat up on the airline. Twelvevolts (5457)

Why do these buggers think they have rights.?

1193814 2011-04-12 10:20:00 Yeah, if they want equal treatment let stop having wimpy special olympics and compete with the other professional athletes as equals. They'll be moaning that ladders and parachutes discriminate against them next. R2x1 (4628)

It has to stop somewhere or the criminals in wheelchairs will be looking for lighter sentences next.

1193816 2011-04-12 20:47:00 Tanya Black and Dan Buckingham – presenters of TVNZ disability show Attitude – had been due to fly from Auckland to Wellington yesterday morning but were not allowed on to their aircraft after they were told they each needed to fly with their own caregiver.

After an embarrassing standoff of 20 minutes or more, they ditched Jetstar and bought new tickets to Wellington on Air New Zealand.

Jetstar confirmed part of the airline's concern was about how they might get to the toilet on the hour-long flight.

The pair, who had been flying to Wellington to discuss changing attitudes to people with disabilities with three government agencies, both have fulltime jobs, drive cars and regularly travel on planes – including Jetstar's – without issue.

Ms Black and Mr Buckingham, who had been travelling with an able-bodied colleague, said that when they went to board their plane yesterday morning they were told by cabin staff to wait at the door, where they ended up holding up other passengers for 20 minutes.

The pair told The Dominion Post the airline eventually said it would let them fly only if they agreed not to go to the media, but they felt dehumanised, humiliated and frustrated, and decided to fly with Air New Zealand.

I hate Jetstar, they're always in the news about some bullshit.

1193818 2011-04-12 22:04:00 Jetstar are a crap airline. I wouldn't fly on their planes if I was paid. Same applies to Qantas I'm afraid. Richard (739)

1193820 2011-04-12 22:43:00 My wife and I both flew Jet Star Wellington/Auckland return a couple of weekends back.

Fantastic service both ways, including overnight accommodation and breakfast in Auckland after our return flight had experienced two aborted attempts at landing in Wellington.

On both of our flights, there was a young fella travelling in a wheel chair. I guess he had a "companion" as there were no difficulties accommodating him on either flight.

I believe that last night's abysmal story on Close Up with Mr Fungus Face was a put up job. Sometimes New Zealand TV journalism leaves a lot to be desired.
