"He's without the social consciousness that is these days required," he said. "There's a huge public campaign to educate drunken drivers and he ignores that and drives to the significant endangerment of the rest of the community." Judge Adeane sentenced Blackberry to 300 hours community work and disqualified him indefinitely. So the offender is a repeat offender (didn't learn his lesson) - and got disqualified indefinitely. About time, although it probably won't stop him driving. It's not uncommon in the UK to lose your licence for life for serious offences, of which this is an example. But they take it more seriously over there. This judge deserves a medal and the slimy lawyer deserves a bullet. <slightly off topic> I cannot understand why we have the concept of 'day licences' here. It's a joke which reinforces people's idea that they don't need to take responsibility for their actions and that there are consequences to their actions, sometimes serious ones. Thought process (although I might be crediting these cretins with something they are not capable of doing: thinking): "I'll go and have a few drinks with my mates. But I have to drive because it's too far to walk - oh well, IF I get caught, I'll just pay the fine and I can always get a day licence." If a few repeat drink/drivers not only lost the ability to get a day licence but also lost their licence for life, then perhaps the idea that's it's OK to drive after having had a few might become less believable.... |

These are already approaching plague proportions in some parts of the country. Just as a weed is any plant that grows in the wrong place, cyclists are innocuous enough until they start appearing on roads, which are designed and built for proper transportation. We don't release rabbits in the lions' den unless we have a surplus of rabbits, so could we not extend the same courtesy to the cyclists? |
