Mind you, there probably isn't much we can do, given it happened 3.8 Billion Light Years away. Hmmmm, I suppose we could wander on over, but I guess we'd need to take a cut lunch. ;) |

He said when he first got shown round (there or Nelson where it started off at??not sure) they showed him the storage warehouse. Stuffed full of expensive specialised equipment. When he asked, he was told it was stuff various scientist had ordered but then they either left or moved or went onto some other research and didn't need it. So there it sat, if someone else wanted one later - a new one was bought. Sounds like typical govt money wastage and inefficiency. |

I wonder what the rationale was then? Probably competition, money saving, and efficiency. What is the justification for the Latter Day Tories sticking it all back together again? Probably just money saving. |

Yes, it was Simon Upstart, he was made minister of science and technology I think because they thought well, at least he can't do much harm in that job, after being bailed out several times by big daddy Birch. |

Yes, but let's face it, back in 1992, DSIR was a dysfunctional organisation, drowning in red tape, with a bunch of grey-suited civil servants running it who didn't know **** from clay. I remember being asked a question at a public meeting as an expert in the subject. I responded and my response was published in the newspaper. Next thing I was hauled before these Head Office bastards and asked to explain why I had spoken in public without seeking prior permission. I was officially reprimanded and a note was put on my personal file. Then, to keep their records in order, they gave me "retrospective provisional approval" to speak in public. At least Simon knocked this sort of bullshit on the head. |
