1194122 2011-04-17 11:50:00 Lots of confusion here, getting busted is not about internet usage.

How pirates in NZ will get busted.

Using a mainstream lame public torrent tracker like "Pirate Bay" they grab a movie lets say "Lord of the Rings"

A snooping company hired by the studio or property owner are seeding in the same Torrent recording IP numbers as people download/share this movie. Its VERY easy to see IP address as most clients actively show them

The snooping company issues a infringement notice to the ISP. The ISP in the past would usually laugh and bin these infringement notices, but now by law they have to pass them on.

Easiest way Pirates will avoid getting caught

Private Torrent trackers in short. They are usually invite only and the snooping company's will always have problems obtaining access. With no access to the tracker they cannot join the torrent to acquire the Ip's.

Using something like Frostwire/Bearshare in the future will be internet suicide.Thank you!! I have trolled through 15 pages just to figure out how copyright holders will know who has copied stuff illegally.

It sounds more dangerous for torrenters than for watchers of streaming vids? Both must be equally illegal (except you dont usually keep and redistribute streamed vids).

1194125 2011-04-17 22:01:00 Yes, obtaining something direct from a server is less likely to get you "found" than if you're going P2P like Torrents, as the copyright holder has to find the server thats serving up the content, contact the admin of that server, get access to the logs, then track you.
For the likes of Torrents, they just download the .torrent, fire it up and they're away laughing!

EDIT: BTW - Don't try torrents through Proxies, specifically the likes of ToR, they ask that you *don't* hammer the network trying to do that: blog.torproject.org

1194126 2011-04-18 01:12:00 What was the law prior to this? Surely it wasn't legal to download copyrighted stuff? :illogical davidmmac (4619)
1194127 2011-04-18 01:22:00 Im sure it wasnt legal. Even if you didnt break NZ law, surely you were covered by a law in the country you downloaded from.

How long before we start to know how many ordinary people are getting pinged?

1194128 2011-04-18 01:45:00 Law comes into effect Sept 1st.

It wasn't legal, but this is an effort to 'streamline' the process to make it easier for copyright holders to rectify "the situation" of people downloading their stuff basically.

I made a brief post in my Blog about it davidmmac, that you might find interesting :)

1194130 2011-04-18 02:05:00 So if I am not downloading anything from torrent sites or file sharing sites, do I have anything to worry about? QW. (15883)
1194131 2011-04-18 03:14:00 So if I am not downloading anything from torrent sites or file sharing sites, do I have anything to worry about?

Nope but then you might be downloading something that is legal from a torrent site such as a Linux distro, the isp will see you downloading torrents but if no one complains about you downloading stuff then your ISP won't monitor you i assume
