1195240 2011-04-18 00:29:00 Which are you for (or against) and why - in the case of a terminal illness, especially where a lot of pain is likely?

This (nz.entertainment.yahoo.com) is what prompts the question...

We are quite happy putting down an animal that is suffering so what is so different about us.

If I ever ended up in a state where I did not posses the ability to throw myself off a bridge, and machines were keeping me alive - I would be most pissed off at those who kept me there.

1195247 2011-04-18 04:43:00 I too, believe that you should have the right to decide.

Controls need to be in place, however. The person administering the fatal dose needs to know that the person making the decision is completely capable of making that choice.

I am very much against keeping someone alive just for the sake of doing so. If a person is no more than a vegetable - contributing nothing - then what is the point?

I have a clause in my will stating that I am not to be kept alive by machines. The machines are to be switched off so I am able to die a natural and dignified death.

For potential Politicians it should be applied earlier, preferably antenatally.

1195249 2011-04-18 06:44:00 I'm for it.

There needs to be strict criteria and signed off by a select group of 'experts' first for it to be legal.

Wasting away to nothing while your body breaks down and systems fail is no way to die. You would be prosecuted for animal cruelty if you did this to your pet.

Does raises the problem about those people whose terminal condition came-about suddenly before they made their choice known, or in young children unable to speak or make such decisions.

There is a fair bit of this "medical assistance" going on now, but it tends to be just before death is expected, and that person may have suffered for weeks leading up to that point.
