1194852 2011-04-15 21:09:00 Last night my cat came in the door at 5000mph, crashed into me (I was standing in the exit-less kitchen) and dropped her rat.

It looked about in panic and dived behind the dishwasher.

Now my kitchen only has one doorway and is quite "compact". The dishwasher hadn't quite finished and I emptied it out, tipped it forward and the rat was there. Call husband to grab rat which ran up the pipes at back, he looks at it and says "it might bite me". At which point the rat decided it was better off inside the back of the dishwasher.
Get cat, pull dishwasher right forward, place cat behind. No. She can't get at it either now.

Dismantle kitchen which was like one of those shuffle the squares around puzzles, move this so we can then get that, then move that, type of exercise.

Eventually with the both of us and the aid of a broom handle the rat came back out and vanished into the other room.

Husband set about cleaning up the kitchen and mopping up water, which has lifted the lino a bit. Sigh.

I go hunt the rat. Original cat had left at this stage, not being impressed with water, noise, crazy humans dragging appliances around the place.

Second cat had noticed and come to see what the excitement was about. She insisted the rat was behind the TV.
Nope, moved clock, TV, SKy, looked inside cabinet, looked behind, no rat. I thought it had moved and gone elsewhere. At this point the ranchslider was wide open and also the back door in the hopes rat had left or would soon leave.

Take 2nd cat around house to get her to check, no, she's back at the TV. At which point I realised the cabinet doesn't sit flat on the floor, there's a hollow bit. Rat leaps out and all 3 of us then play chase the rat around the lounge, behind the couch, on the chairs, up the curtains, 2nd cat flying around the room wrecking the place.

Rat then dives out ranchslider and original cat catches it again. We lock them out.

Or so we thought.

20 mins later 2nd cat brings it back in (don't ask me where she got in). And rat disappears into our bedroom.

Repeat exercise of moving furniture, all 3 of us diving around the room making wild grabs at rat. Remove drawers from furniture, remove clothes from drawers while rat plays hide in all the drawers games.

Eventually I got it and it bit me but I only had it's tail and lost it again.
Then husband gets broom handle again and jabs at it in the corner. Which hurt it.

I then start to feel sorry for it, it was hurt now and terrified. After more (slower) chases, I got it and gave it to husband as rat needed vet attention now, so he took it where I couldn't see and killed it and chucked it back over the neighbours where the damn things breed.

Poor thing, it was quite a young one and a rather interesting light brown colour.

Original cat spent the night outside sulking.

I had a similar thing with a spider years ago. I don't 'do' spiders...

Bloody huge thing on the wall in the bedroom. Emptied a can of Raid onto it, and then lost it somewhere in the bedroom when it fell to the floor.

Tipped the place upside down.

Couldn't find it to confirm death and get the remains out of the house.

Slept on the couch in the lounge for a couple of nights after that...

Yes...I subsequently bought a new big girl's blouse!

1194854 2011-04-15 21:30:00 I was at a mates place before school on friday actually (all the boarders had all ready cleaned the houses up so we were waiting on those slow dayboys :D) He'n not a boarder but he lives on site.

His cat was having a bit of a play with a mouse, eventually the mouse got into the hedge, his dad came out to "rescue" the mouse which promptly ran up his leg, tog a jump onto a table and gapped it into the house.

Live long and prosper little mouse, if we ever see you again you won't be so lucky.

(Hate rats, the bastards are huge around the sheds and they aren't afraid to bite)

Great story pctek. That will have got the blood pumping and the arthritic joints creaking.

Years ago we had a beautiful big black cat who was a great hunter. He presented me with a very live huge rat outside on the concrete path (why do they do that?). Rat had ghastly gnashers, and I was worried about said cat. In the basement was an old golf club left behind by a previous tenant, so I grabbed it and whacked the rat with it. Stone dead.

The Cat gave me a long smouldering look of utter disgust and loathing and stalked away in high dudgeon. "What? - What did I do?" No answer, but I guess I spoiled his fun and displayed a lack of faith in his ability to deal with the rat's horrid fangs.

1194858 2011-04-15 21:59:00 Sounds like your house had two catscans to find the rat.

Cats are lovely animals except when they bring mice or birds in. Why they have to show them off I have no idea. If the mice or birds are not found and got rid of from inside the house they will start to smell the house out.

I have a white cat who quite often brings birds in. One day while I was sitting in my armchair watching TV with the back door open she came inside with a bird. I let out a roar to the effect, "Get that thing out of here". She came rushing over to me, dropped it at my feet and took off out the door. I am sure I heard her say, "Here is your tea Bob".

I quite often have to put a collar with a bell on it to stop her catching birds.

.

Oh yes, I'm all sore and seized up this morning. Feel a bit like I was the one being bashed with broom handles.

I don't mind the mice, birds, cicadas (which last 5 minutes anyway, still buzzing as they disappear down her throat) but rats - They climb, they hide, they eat the appliances and cause heaps of problems, happened before once so no way was I assuming it had gone.

1194861 2011-04-15 23:08:00 My sister had a couple of cats a few years back. Older one was the master hunter - showed off his catch before devouring it. Younger one was a good hunter, but liked to let live birds go inside the house :stare:  Myth (110)
