If they genuinely request an end to their misery, who has the right to deny them death with dignity to escape a sea of pain and misery. The living will, or as in Queensland the " Personal Medical Directive" go partway to answering the problem. Perhaps many of the opponents think their families can't wait for an opportunity to get rid of them, be they potential profit centres or black hole expense centres. |

I never met the young person, the 12 year old godson of a friend. He (the young person) had some horrible terminal disease, I don't know what it was called, where the bone structure is absorbed by the body. He fully understood what was happening, and made a rational decision to be euthanised. He spent his last week putting his affairs in order. He died knowing the incredible pain he was in was to end, knowing he would just go to sleep and not wake up, but with the thought it may not be the end; there was no way to know. This was the best possible ending for this young guy. Supported by family and friends who put all their own negative and emotional feelings aside not to mention the help of a wise and courageous medic. |
