1223744 2011-08-16 23:21:00 Hi, i have a work colleague with a Toshiba usb 750gb hard drive that wont show up in windows 7. It has photos on it he doesnt want to lose
I have tried a live linux disk but it cannot access the drive
In XP the drive shows up but there is nothing there, ie total size = nothing and free space = nothing

Any ideas? TIA

Cheers

1223745 2011-08-16 23:30:00 Take the drive out of the USB case and try it directly attached to a PC.

FWIW now, if you have data in only one place, then you are asking to lose it ...

Yep Already had that discussion with him :)
Im giving getdataback a go and it looks like it might find the files, so maybe the usb is not knackered, the drive might be...
If that deosnt work i will rip it apart and do as you suggested Fred. Cheers

EDIT Getdataback can definately see the directories and files, how can i check it will work without having to purchase this? I dont want to buy it if it wont recover them. I tried recuva but that found nothing btw.

1223747 2011-08-17 00:17:00 I use GDB quite frequently and it's pretty damn good, would be worth buying, if it can see the files you'll get them back, no way to tell at this stage if they are corrupted or not though, bit of a gamble. wratterus (105)

Ok then i will let the owner know, maybe he can pay for it and i will keep it for the time taken, looks like a bout 50Gb of pictures :groan:

Otherwise if he wants a second opinion he can take it to the shop

Thanks Guys

I can also vouch for Get Data Back, well worth the purchase.
It has saved a lot of our clients a lot of heartache.
GDB even managed to recover photos from a laptop that someone had run the factory restore on and forgot to backup anything up!
I've tried a number of recovery programs and GDB has always been the best.
If that can't get it back then your only hope would probably be a data recovery specialist which can cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars!
