1196491 2011-04-22 13:25:00 After watching a few videos one hot air soldering in order to re ball some GPU's I carefully sidetracked myself into how to solder hundreds of tiny pins on IC's.

Which reminded me why the hell electronics is so fun, it also reminded me that I hadn't really done any decent work since DSE stopped selling funway kits, followed by everything else that was useful (jaycar is quite a way from my place :p)

So I decided to build a nice spectrum analyser, turns out its not so easy. There are plenty of easyish ones but they all have some pretty decent design flaws that I haven't the knowledge (or possibly will power to learn how) to fix them.

I came across this www.youritronics.com which seemed promising. Apart from the fact I can't get hold of the project files.

So I turn to my fellow PF1'ers in order to find a nice spectrum analyzer project for a moderately skilled person to build.

Also atm I plan on making it from 10x20 Blue SMD's (140mcd 125deg angle), haven't worked out the spacing however apart form the extra wiring required the actual function shouldn't differ much from using prefab boards of SMD's as used in the article.

Also, is 10x20 realistic and would 120-140 mcd be bright enough? the reason i'm using those is because I want to do a 360 controller and RF board mod and they use 0603 SMD's, even then i'm not sure if 140 is bright enough.

Cheers for any info/help

Side note, if I wanted to display a pattern (such as an oscillating sine wave or text) would that be possible? and should I try making it from multi colour LED's to add extra WOW!!

Also, if anyone else wants to build one too we could probably share shipping orders, if you live in wellington or masterton we could even do it together... (cue odd looks from slightly seedy comment :p)

Cheers again :D

1196492 2011-04-22 23:04:00 Surplustronics on Queen Street is a very good electronics supplier.

That's funny, because I can get the files just fine

1196493 2011-04-23 01:17:00 The pdf link seemingly redirects to a website. But I got it opened in Google Docs. Try this...

Google search: LED Bar Audio Spectrum Analyzer +pdf

Scroll down to the result: [PDF] A Digital real time...etc.

Click on the Quick view link. If signed in to Google/Google Docs it will display the project file, with diagrams, etc. Might open without any sign in to default to your PDF reader.

1196494 2011-04-23 02:24:00 When you did the .pdf search did you get this?: www.transkommunikation.ch

Because that is a different schematic.

Helensun, not sure why you could get the files, all 3 links for me redirected to a site

EDIT: never mind, I found it on page 2

Just checked out suplustronics, good site but at $1.20 an LED!! yoicks!! $360 for 300. I can get them for 30 US from ebay :p, still I can get other bits from there

1196495 2011-04-23 05:22:00 Did you know there is actually a variation across the myriad types of LEDs? Strangely enough, el-cheapo e-bay ones are not always of the absolute top rank. Unfortunately those greedy sods charging the most have often grabbed the best ones. ;) R2x1 (4628)
1196496 2011-04-23 09:12:00 I managed to upload a file onto my site - just for you.

PM me when you have used it and I will upload the zip.

Yeah, I know that. We bought a whole lot of IR LED's that were of mixed quality. Since there are 300 of them there should be enough to get a relatively uniform brightness.

That being said, I will be careful. I might try and find some from a reseller in Beijing whilst I'm here
