1224302 2011-08-18 23:42:00 seems rather unusual that both are so slow.

try , as a diag test

start-run-msconfig
disable ALL startup items, services -tick hide MS, then disable all the NON MS services
(they can all be restarted/turned on after testing)
restart & see how it runs then.

1224303 2011-08-18 23:56:00 Dont disable services under msconfig. If you want to disable any, disable them under services Speedy Gonzales (78)
1224304 2011-08-19 02:41:00 Over time windows get bogged down with crap, corrupted files etc which will cause slowness. Crap programs that hog memory like Nortons will slow thing down.

Sometimes there is nothing you can do to speed it up any more other than save all the data, wipe the drive do a fresh install and put the data / programs back. That alone will increase speed :)

Yes.

If the usual cleanups don't help much, wipe it and start over.

1224305 2011-08-19 05:33:00 Inside last month both computers have had a format recover, desk top by professional Microsoft certified tech . Big deal  I've seen some people all the quals in the world, and while they can do things on paper actual real life they are hopeless .

It was a month ago you mention ??

If the installs were from factory recovery CD's or partitions all the OEM junk would be loaded back .

I never use factory recoveries, I do it from scratch that way no "extra" rubbish from the OEM (HP, Dell) are added, and there is a noticeable difference in speed .

Was it OK then or was it bad right after this so called "tech" fixed it -- if it was bad after the fix, then its obviously not fixed correctly ??

It takes a few seconds for a XP computer to be change from running good to a bucket of sh1t :D if something goes wrong, or some corruption occurs .

EDITED: Just courious, clcik start /run type in eventvwr go to the system logs, look and see if there are a whole bunch of errors saying "side-by-side"

If there are, then that will slow down windows (xp) and the fix is very simple as well .

What AV is on these ????

1224306 2011-08-19 09:58:00 Go here to checkup on your startup programs:www.techspot.com and go here www.mlin.net for a tiny machine coded program in your control panel to give you full control of startups. Disable MSOffice startup & indexing disable Adobe PDF reader startup (common) PPp (9511)

Disable file indexing. Done that all 5 drives. Zap the Windows Pre-fetch folder every week every day. Optimise Display Settings, yep. Remove the Desktop Picture tried that, makes no difference. Speedup Folder Browsing ,yep. Rest I’ll try. :thanks for this.
